Fast facts
Practice type: Hybrid
Specialties: Addiction, insomnia, musculoskeletal pain, respiratory conditions, women’s health
Styles: Five Element acupuncture, NADA, pediatric acupuncture

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
I decided to change my career to acupuncture after being a patient for several years and finding that acupuncture changed my outlook. I worked in corporate America for over 20 years and was well on my way to being sick and miserable in my life. Acupuncture changed all of that. I am now happy and grateful and full of hope. I live life with wonder each and every day and I cannot think of a better gift for my patients.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
As a practitioner I approach every session as an openhearted intelligent acupuncturist who creates an open, safe, nonjudgmental space for my clients. My goal is to help my patients find their way to inner peace through health and passion in their lives. I have spent much of my life in service to others both personally and in business. I believe that my unique training and skills give me the ability to help people successfully achieve their health and happiness goals.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I specialize in treating women and children in all the stages of their lives and development. I have found that issues of infertility, depression, heart break and anxiety are often significant factors in women’s lives. At Dynamic Strategies Acupuncture I specialize in helping women through these life challenges so that they find true joy and fulfillment in their lives. Children and teens have their own unique challenges as they have to grow up in a complex world. At Dynamic Strategies Acupuncture I am concerned with giving children and teens a natural treatment modality for the issues that face them during their growth. I use many different techniques from the traditions of Chinese medicine, aromatherapy, Bach flower essence, and Zero Balancing to treat pain and enhance the health of my patients. I believe that wellness comes from within—when there is an alignment of body, mind and spirit, healing is just around the corner.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
I often hear that people are afraid of needles and that they have heard acupuncture hurts. In acupuncture we use a different kind of needle from what you are used to in the doctor’s office. We use a solid needle the width of several fine hairs. Sometimes, in some locations, the needle sensation can be exciting. It is nothing like a bee sting because the sensation lasts less than five seconds.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I stay healthy in my life by cooking all organic foods from scratch that I grow on the farm where I grew up. I truly believe that cutting out all food processing and knowing exactly where your ingredients come from can help solve nine out of 10 health issues. I also walk several times a week and meditate on a regular basis.

Fast facts
Practice type: Hybrid
Specialties: Anxiety, autoimmune conditions, depression, general wellness, infertility
Styles: community acupuncture, Dr. Tan’s Balance Method, Five Element acupuncture

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
When I was 29, I suffered from IBS, depression and chronic fatigue. Acupuncture was the only thing that helped and the more I learned, the more I loved it. I decided to leave a high-paying sales position to pursue my dream of helping the world one person at a time.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I am different from other acupuncturists because I am part of a Sufi community that focuses on cultivating the ideal of Divine Embodiment. Many of the community members are healers in one form or another, and our lifestyle, outlook and daily practices cultivate a deep ability to bring healing from a Divine place. I’ve also studied spiritual healing at the University of Spiritual Healing and Sufism.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I really enjoy developing relationships with individuals and seeing them make transformations in their lives.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
The biggest misconception that I hear about acupuncture is that it is only for pain. Acupuncture is thousands of years old and can treat the whole range of physical ailments in the human body.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
In order to stay healthy in my own life, I am focused on eating a healthy diet. I believe that the root of all sickness comes from the food we eat. Additionally, I focus on incorporating movement into my daily routine in the form of qigong and yoga (I am a certified yoga instructor) and maintaining my spiritual health (through a variety of Sufi spiritual practices).

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
As a pre-med student I became disenfranchised with Western medicine. I had personal experiences with doctors and a course load that crammed in information but didn’t consider compassion. Fortunately, I also had exposure to Eastern philosophy, Tai Chi and meditation. This exposure led to exploration and quickly into a career path.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I find that most acupuncturists tend to fall into one of two categories: the traditionalists and the medical practitioners. I am a hybrid, with one foot in modern techniques and research and one foot in traditional training and theory. I hope this translates into better care and clinical results for my patients.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
The theories of acupuncture lend themselves to all aspects of life, not just sickness and health. I enjoy being able to use acupuncture to help patients find balance in their health and daily life. I also love having the ability to use the principles of acupuncture in my day-to-day life.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
I have tons of interactions with people who have seen one too many bad kung fu movies. All too often I get questions like, “If you hit someone there can you really _____________?” I normally give them a stone-cold look and say, “Yes.”

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
Tai Chi, meditation, qigong, Xing Yi, quality family time.

Anything else people should know about you?</strong?
I'm also certified to treat animals. I treat a wide array of issues in pets as well as people.

Fast facts
Practice type: Private
Specialties: General wellness, infertility, menopause, menstrual conditions, sexual conditions
Styles: Japanese acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), trigger point acupuncure

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
Acupuncture has, for most of my life, been my go-to source for wellness, be it preventative care or management of acute symptoms or pain. Through my experience as a patient, I became awed by the body’s incredible potential for health as I witnessed many of my own chronic issues disappear with just a little coaxing from needles, moxa, and bodywork. I became an acupuncturist to share that awe with my community, and offer an alternative to the one-size-fits-all, toxic side-effects ridden forms of healthcare which are unfortunately most accessible. Acupuncture can be, and should be, available to everyone!

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I strive to be flexible and open in my approach to treatment. While there is certainly something to be said for firmly adhering to specific protocols from one tradition, I feel like there are too many brilliant variations on the theme of natural healing to not be constantly expanding and incorporating new ideas. If there is one thing I’ve learned from working with people it’s that each person is unique, with a unique background, identity, and health history. I intend to honor that individuality and meet you where you are in each moment, drawing from my full range of education and experience to craft the best, tailor-made treatment possible for you.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
One of the most common things I hear from new patients is that acupuncture is their “last straw.” They’re aching for a baby, or they’ve been suffering from excruciating cramps or digestive issues, or coping with a nagging pain from an old injury and just can’t take it anymore. They’ve tried a multitude of other professionals for their condition and have gotten either periodic relief or no relief at all, so they’ve decided to throw all caution to the wind and try that crazy ancient getting-poked-with-needles thing—and it works! One of my dearest colleagues calls this the “wow factor.” I’m not sure if it’s more a thrill for me or my patients, but to know that I am able to facilitate that sort of tremendous healing change and help to return confidence in people’s bodies is an incredible thing.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
The most frustrating misconception I hear about acupuncture is that it is just for rich people/”new age” people/women/men/insert other limiting stereotype here. The question of healthcare affordability is extremely salient, and it is disappointing that there are not more practitioners who are willing to take part in the discussion. I impart to my patients the vital importance of taking care of themselves, even though it often requires financial expenditures to do so. However, I make every effort to work with each person to maximize their treatment options in a way that is both effective and comfortable for their wallet. As for the other stereotypes, the only way to know if acupuncture is, or is not, for you is to try it out!

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I’ve done a lot of extra training in whole food nutrition, so healthy food—from seed to table—is a big deal for me. I also train in Muay Thai for exercise and a powerful release of energy, spend as much time as possible outside, and surround myself with laughter and a loving community.

In addition to being an acupuncturist, you are also a doula. Do you recommend acupuncture to women during pregnancy?
Acupuncture is not only safe, but can be extraordinarily effective during pregnancy, from ensuring conception through managing nausea and aches and pains, all the way to delivery and postpartum recovery. During labor, acupuncture is tremendously helpful for getting things started and moving along smoothly, as well as being an adjunct to doula support for pain management and emotional relaxation once labor is fully underway. I am thrilled to be able to combine my experience as a birth doula, massage therapist, and acupuncturist in working with moms and their partners to facilitate a natural, easy pregnancy from pre-conception to birth and beyond!
