Why did you become an acupuncturist?
My family was saved by acupuncture tremendously—with my lower back, during our daughter’s birth, and my husband with a spinal cord injury. I was thankful and inspired by those who helped us when we were facing challenging times. I felt like I was missing something meaningful and useful to share with the community.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I only treat one patient at a time. I have two reasons for this: to build rapport and trust with each of my patients, and to allow extra time for other modalities, such as tuina massage or moxa therapy, in addition to acupuncture. These lead to speedy recoveries. Additionally, I specialize in pediatrics. As a mother myself, I can understand parents’ concerns over children’s health issues. I also love treating children. I use non-needle methods for treating them. I also speak Japanese fluently.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
Every time my patients say they are doing/feeling better after a treatment, I feel very warm inside. Witnessing proud happy expressions from little ones when they get needled for the first time brings me big smiles. Getting referrals from my patients also make me really happy. Also, getting to know my patients and laughing together is special.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
There are two: 1. “It hurts!” Acupuncture needles are very thin. Many feel a little prick with a needle is inserted. After that, feelings of warmth, ache, and fuzziness are common. If you feel a sharpness lingering, let your acupuncturist know right away, and he or she can adjust the needles.

2. “I tried it and it didn’t work” Acupuncture is a cumulative therapy for some conditions. As you receive more treatments, greater effectiveness is expected. It’s important to give it faith and find an acupuncturist you can trust.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
Cooking and eating real food, especially miso soup (almost daily). Having relaxation time is important, too. I love reading books/magazines in a nice, warm bath. Watching silly Japanese shows and laughing out loud is relaxing to me as well. Gardening, dancing, singing, and doing tai chi and yoga all keep me happy and healthy. I believe getting massage and acupuncture regularly is crucial to healthy living.

You mentioned using non-needle methods for treating children. Can you explain that?
I needle kids only when they feel okay and give me permission to do so. I show them the needles before hand. The youngest person I’ve needled was three years old. He was so curious after seeing his mom being needled and wanted to give it a try. In addition to the needles, I often use a laser pen (microcurrent) to treat younger kids. These pens don’t cause any sensation, and often kids are fascinated by red light. I also use pediatric tuna massage, moxa heat therapy, shonishin (another non-needle technique), acupressure, and Chinese formulas in tincture form. In general, children respond more quickly than adults to acupuncture treatments.

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
Wanting to help athletes and weekend warriors, I’ve found that acupuncture is one of the best natural medicines for pain management and treating stress. Unlike pharmaceutical drugs, acupuncture and herbs have limited to no side effects, which is very important to a patient’s wellness.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
Having a niche in pain management and stress allows me to focus my treatments on specific conditions. I also like watching TV and sports. You don’t have to be a hippie or hipster to enjoy acupuncture.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love getting to know my patients, figuring out the best way to treat them, and seeing how excited and happy they are when they start seeing results.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
That it hurts, and that it’s a bunch of mumbo jumbo. It’s good to have some sensation from acupuncture, but pain should not be one of them. Also, just because we don’t know exactly how acupuncture works doesn’t mean it doesn’t work. I’ve seen it work for a lot of people.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
Eat good foods and exercise my body and mind.

Do you accept medical insurance for acupuncture?
The majority of major medical providers cover acupuncture. If you don’t know if your medical benefits include acupuncture, give us a call and we will find out for you.

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
As an acupuncturist, I always get asked the question, “How did you get into this field?” The short answer is: The hard way. As a college athlete, I endured excessive physical stress which resulted in several injuries. At the time, I thought my only option was surgery. Four years and multiple surgeries later, I thought there had to be a better way. As I was recovering from my fifth knee surgery a year after college graduation, I found my answer in an alternative health magazine. I read about a former college athlete, in my same position, who was now an acupuncturist. The article went on to explain her story and the benefits of acupuncture. I was sold! I made an appointment with my local acupuncturist in small town North Dakota and the rest is history.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I specialize in treating chronic and musculoskeletal pain. In doing so, I first look at the entire body to find out what weaknesses allowed the injury and subsequent pain to happen. Once this is established, all muscles supporting the injured site are treated—not just those involved in the injury. For example, most people with knee injures also have weak and tight hips. If this is the case, I will treat not only the knee but also the hips in order to prevent future injuries to both areas.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
If you have ever been in pain, you know how debilitating it can be, both physically and emotionally. My greatest joy comes when I can facilitate your healing process and your active life is restored.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
That it hurts. Once you talk to a friend who has had acupuncture, this misconception is quickly dismissed. Another misconception I hear is that Western medicine doesn’t know how it works and therefore acupuncture must be a placebo. In fact, overwhelming evidence shows that acupuncture increases blood flow along paths that are blocked. This increase of blood flow restores function to muscles, organs and even your brain. Over time, this reverses symptoms and disease.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
Balance—which, as everyone knows, is easier said than done. I once heard a mom and successful business woman say that the key to balance is focusing on one thing until another thing needs your attention. Keep what you just put aside in your peripheral. I couldn’t agree more. Staying mindful of what my body and mind need, and reacting to those needs, keeps me healthy. For me, that involves eating whole, nourishing foods; exercising everyday, even if it’s just a short walk; and clearing my mind and dealing with stressors as they arise.

Practice type: Private
Specialties: Fibromyalgia, headaches / migraines, insomnia, menopause, musculoskeletal pain
Styles: Herbal therapy, Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), blood chemistry analysis

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
I studied Chinese medicine because it is a comprehensive medical system. I did not want to treat patients with alternative methods using a Western allopathic diagnosis. Acupuncture provides me with the science and theory to arrive at a diagnosis based on principles of Chinese medicine alone. Acupuncture offers a completely different view and understanding of the body and its systems. Because of this, I knew that it would provide me with the tools to diagnose and treat many conditions that continue to baffle other popular medical approaches. Every day the results continue to be inspiring, even after 15 years in practice. These amazing results translate into a better quality of life for my patients as well as continuously feeding my passion for this approach to optimal health.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I love my work. I hear from my patients that my passion for solving difficult health questions sets me apart from other acupuncturists. I enjoy working closely with each person who comes to me. I make sure to give each patient my undivided time and attention. I conduct a thorough examination and obtain an extensive medical history to assess both physical and emotional health. This information is distilled and analyzed within the framework of Traditional Chinese Medicine in order to arrive at a precise diagnosis, which determines the specific treatment. Chinese medicine promotes the smooth, healthy flow of energy and stimulates the natural balance of body and mind. The result is relief from pain, improved physical health, and increased vitality and serenity.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
Acupuncture is both art and science. I love using rigorous reasoning to arrive at the correct diagnosis, yet I know that selection of points and herbs is also an art requiring special attention and intuition about what will best help each specific individual. I get incredible rewards from helping people feel better so they can do whatever it is they want to do each day without physical, mental or emotional limitations holding them back. I love seeing the expression on a face that didn’t believe relief was possible and yet here it is! I love sharing the knowledge I have with people so that they are able to maintain the improvements they gained from acupuncture and herbal therapies. I love that I have met so many inspiring people as patients, mentors and teachers as I continue to grow and learn from each and every one.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
People say acupuncture only works if you believe it will work. The mind is a powerful tool, but anyone who has seen a dog or a horse get acupuncture knows that the effect is not a placebo effect. Acupuncture is powerful medicine when applied with skill. The biggest misconception in the media is to limit the conditions for which acupuncture is effective. Everyone agrees that it helps back pain and migraines, but they are missing some of the amazing results for insomnia, anxiety, hot flashes, depression, IBS and other serious digestive complaints such as GERD or reflux, shingles, fibromyalgia and much more. When I first started practicing 15 years ago, needles were still considered “experimental” by the FDA. Now Dr. Oz has talked about acupuncture on Oprah. Acupuncture has become a common household word. This is encouraging because so many people will be helped without surgery or unnecessary medications.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
The most important thing I do for my health is to make time to care for myself. For me this means some quiet time every day. I make sure to give myself the gift of complete relaxation even during very busy times. I believe that incorporating fun as well as relaxation into my daily life helps me stay happy as well as healthy. For me this means that I dance almost daily. I also get acupuncture and take Chinese herbs myself to maintain optimal health. Of course I eat well, which in Chinese medicine may mean a very different diet than many popular health fads. Whole foods and relaxing while eating are of utmost importance. I take care of my body, mind and soul in order to feel my best.

What is blood chemistry analysis?
Blood chemistry analysis is an innovative approach to reading standard lab test results which uses tighter acceptable ranges to reveal imbalances before symptoms arise, and enables a comprehensive, holistic diagnosis, which specifically targets the root causes of health concerns. Optimal health is the standard I use in analyzing lab test results. Looking at tighter ranges allows me to accurately assess the strengths and weaknesses of each individual. By addressing every organ, gland, and system, the whole person is brought into balance. These tangible numeric indicators facilitate tremendous accuracy in the administration of a personalized plan including acupuncture, herbs, supplements, nutritional and lifestyle recommendations while accurately guiding the healing process. The results are often dramatic and extend well beyond the initial reason for the consultation.

Fast facts
Practice type: Private
Specialties: Allergies, digestive conditions, headaches/migraines, musculoskeletal pain, stress
Styles: Dr. Tan’s Balance Method, herbal therapy, Japanese acupuncture

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
Acupuncture got me back on my feet after a tree-planting injury 30 years ago. My curiosity was piqued so I signed up for an acupressure class—using finger pressure on acupuncture points—and I began inflicting my new skill on friends and co-workers. People liked the results and I discovered how much I enjoyed helping people feel better. In 1984, I moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico to attend Southwest Acupuncture College and three years later returned to start my practice in Eugene.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
For 25 years, I’ve worked full-time in a busy acupuncture practice. That means I have treated most of the conditions for which people are seeking treatment, thousands of times. I also work with an associate acupuncturist who complements my own skills with her knowledge of Chinese herbal medicine and cranial massage therapy. Our front office staff is fabulous. They make you feel welcome from the moment you walk in the door. They’ll get you the appointment times you need, handle your insurance billing, and make sure you get the care you need without hassles or delays.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
Watching patients leave the clinic, with a smile on their face, after a successful course of treatment.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
That acupuncture is a “new age” therapy, or some sort of religion. (Not a religion, and definitely not new.)

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I stay out of cars as much as possible. I bike to work and go for walks whenever I have a chance. (Walking is a great meditation.) I do a movement class (Nia) once or twice a week. I also get acupuncture or some kind of bodywork regularly. I am blessed with a very active and loving family that shares my love of paddling, camping and travel.

What happens during an initial visit to your office?
To understand how previous injuries and illnesses may have contributed to your main complaint, we will review your health history in some detail. We will make sure you understand what acupuncture is and how it works, in language that you can clearly understand. If I believe there is some assessment or treatment you should consider prior to receiving acupuncture, I will provide you a referral. If you have insurance, we will verify your acupuncture benefits. Whether or not you have insurance, our front office staff will give you a detailed explanation of the cost for our recommended course of treatment. In short, we will help you understand the cause of your health problem, if and how acupuncture can help, and what the cost of your treatment will be. If you submit a brief “stress survey” on our website, we offer this initial visit at no charge.

Fast facts
Practice type: Private
Specialties: Anxiety, depression, general wellness, musculoskeletal pain, stress
Styles: Auricular acupuncture, facial rejuvenation acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
Initially I came to acupuncture for my own healing for a longstanding pain and nerve issue. Acupuncture worked when 10 years of surgery and other interventions did not. I had been in the field of social work and I discovered through acupuncture the world of mind-body healing. I enjoy helping people in their healing process, physical and emotional.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I have an integrative practice using a variety of modalities—acupuncture, energy medicine, micro-current electricity, craniosacral therapy, acupressure, and other techniques. I am able to draw upon many skills and techniques to assist each person according to what is best for them. I only see one person at a time so everyone receives my full attention.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I have been practicing for 18 years (since 1993). I am fascinated by my work and thoroughly enjoy it. I continue to grow through continuing education. Most recently I have been working with indigenous healers in Mexico. My favorite part is the relationships I have with my clients.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
The biggest misconception that I hear is that acupuncture hurts. I have a gentle approach and have treated children as well as adults with acupuncture. While a fear of needles is understandable, acupuncture can be done in a gentle, non-invasive way.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I do my best to “walk my talk.” I exercise, eat well, dance, spend time in nature and enjoy social time as well as quiet time. I take vacations to rejuvenate myself. I receive bodywork sessions regularly. I enjoy my life!
