Fast facts
Practice type: Private
Specialties: Allergies, cosmetic care, infertility, pediatric conditions, women’s health
Styles: Facial rejuvenation acupuncture, pediatric acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
I was attracted to acupuncture after I was involved in two car accidents and was unable to get rid of my neck and upper back pain with other therapies. Chinese medicine was also able to help me get off of the prednisone and antibiotic cycle that I was on for year-round rhinitis. After my great experience with acupuncture and herbs, I wanted to share these therapies with others.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I am a mother and have raised my child from the very beginning using Traditional Chinese Medicine. I have a huge interest in pediatrics and helping resolve childhood issues. I also want to help parents resolve their own health issues, and teach them how to live a healthy lifestyle so that they can be good examples to their children and families.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I most enjoy the great joy of hearing how much better patients feel, even after their first treatment. Most report that they are more relaxed, sleeping better, and feel more levelheaded.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
The biggest misconception I encounter is that acupuncture is a “magic bullet.” Sometimes individuals think that their chronic issues can be completely resolved in just one or two treatments. One treatment may not be enough—if you’ve been dealing with an issue for a long time, it will take time for the body to heal.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I stay healthy in my own life first and foremost by eating healthy, organic fruits and vegetables, and grass or organically fed meats. I eat seasonally and locally as much as possible. As well, I take every opportunity to laugh and live in the moment. This keeps me mentally healthy. I also walk and hike in the great outdoors as often as possible and practice yoga regularly.

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
No man is an island. No one symptom is an island. No cell is an island either. I was on the med-school track in college, having a hard time staying interested in looking at the world through a microscope. One semester, I took a class on Eastern versus Western medical philosophy. That’s when things started to make more sense.

The holistic approach to Eastern medicine and philosophy—the focus on community and our mind’s relationship with our body, and our organs’ relationships to each other—all made so much more sense to me. So, I changed my focus. I zoomed out. And now I get to do the same for others. I get to help other people see the bigger picture with their pain and problems, and help them live better with their bodies as one.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
My ultimate goal as an acupuncturist is to never see you again, or, to see your sparingly. Yes, it’s a terrible business model, but it’s what I believe in. Acupuncture’s main function is to stimulate the body’s own ability to heal and take care of itself. My short-term goal is to prime that healing pump and get your body’s circulation moving. Once things start to circulate, your body learns to take over.

Think of a flowing stream versus brackish water. There’s life in the flowing stream, and as long as it keeps flowing, it won’t become brackish and end up being a breeding ground for thousands of mosquitoes. We have too many of those in Texas as it is.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
People are awesome, and knowing that I can help make awesome people healthier is very enjoyable. The easiest way to health is to simply be aware. When a person knows that physical pain is also mental, and mental pain is also physical, he instantly becomes more aware of his own body. So, I not only help people feel better, I help them be better to their bodies. You only have one body, so be nice to it!

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
I think it’s really great when I get a patient who is already aware of acupuncture and tells me that he believes in it. But, you don’t need to believe in acupuncture to make it work. Acupuncture has been holding its own for thousands of years. There are hundreds and thousands of studies and texts about how acupuncture effectively improves a myriad of conditions. Acupuncture just works!

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I stay healthy by staying balanced. I’ve run a marathon and sat through a movie marathon at Alamo Drafthouse. I do eat Texas barbecue—how can you not? I do have days where all I do is sit around and read or watch movies. These aren’t actions to feel guilty about, but natural counterparts to running errands all day, working, and being food conscious.

Creating a balanced lifestyle is not about working hard and playing hard. Working hard and playing hard is still “hard.” It’s not about pushing your body to the limits. It’s about listening to what your body wants and finds easy. If your body is enjoying itself, it won’t give you a hard time when you do need to push it.

Styles: Herbal therapy, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Master Tung acupuncture

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
Over years of clinical practice and exploring avenues to bring my own health into balance, I have come to understand the importance of addressing the body and the mind/emotions in equal measure. Chinese medicine is ideally suited to address the connection between body and emotions and to helping restore physical and emotional balance. Acupuncture is a chance for me to bring together my love of movement and bodywork, my understanding of the healing balance provided by nature, and my commitment to bringing more creativity and health to this earth.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
In addition to my training in Chinese medicine, I have training and experience in a both psychotherapy and other body disciplines, including yoga, tai chi, and Shiatsu, as well as dance movement therapy. I love helping people find ways to integrate their emotional and physical selves through movement and creative expression, as well as with all the wisdom that Chinese medicine has to offer.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I am excited when I am witness to people being able to make connections between how they are living their lives and how their bodies are expressing that life. I also believe that healing is most likely to occur when both practitioner and client are equal participants in the treatment process and I love encouraging each person to play an active role in his/her own healing journey.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
I often hear that acupuncture must be painful. Possibly this is because it involves needles. But this makes me sad, because the needles offer so much healing, and the amount of pain experienced is negligible. More often than not, there is no pain at all! It seems that in response to these fears, some people are not able to experience this for themselves, which also means that they will not be able to receive the many benefits that acupuncture has to offer.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I have been fortunate to have learned from many teachers over the years the arts of meditation, tai chi, yoga and dance. Listening to the body has been the main teacher and healer for me in my personal journey. In addition, I love to express myself creatively and find that anytime I make art, cook a meal, or sing/chant, it helps me to feel more balanced and alive. I am always grateful when I can pass on this enthusiasm to others who wish to become more healthy and joyful in their lives.

Fast facts
Practice type: Hybrid
Specialties: Allergies, anxiety, digestive conditions, general wellness, cancer support
Styles: Auricular (ear) acupuncture, herbal therapy, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
After spending over a decade as a research scientist, I had an “ah-ha” moment. I realized that in order to help a whole person, I needed to stop focusing on individual cells. Studying immunology and physiology gave me such an appreciation for the human body, but Chinese medicine continues to give me a deep gratitude for life in its entirety. My background gives me a unique skill set of being able to bridge the gap between Western and Chinese medicine. I always knew I wanted to make a difference; I just didn’t know how. Now I have a clear path and purpose.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I believe having a connection with your practitioner is imperative in the healing process. We talk about many different issues, from bodily functions to emotional roller-coaster rides. I pride myself on being open, approachable, understanding and honest. I consider myself a partner in my patients’ journeys to get back to a place where they live life to the fullest. With my guidance, my patients not only feel better physically but also have new tools to ensure they stay that way. I strongly believe in educating my patients about their bodies, how I’m utilizing Chinese medicine to help them, and suggesting lifestyle changes.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
Every day I get to spend time with amazing people who inspire me to learn more and teach more. At my core I am a problem solver, and each person is a puzzle for me to put back together. I enjoy the challenges and the struggles along the way, but I love that moment when a patient looks at me and says, “thank you.” I feel lucky to get so much personal satisfaction from my job.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
I get frustrated when someone says, “I’ve tried acupuncture once, and it didn’t work.” Many people are looking for a magic bullet and give up after a single try. Acupuncture is an additive process; it will take a commitment and multiple sessions. Yes, plenty of times after just one treatment the results can seem magical, but you should still keep on the treatment plan your acupuncturist has set out for you. Conversely, don’t give up after one session if you didn’t experience a miracle. Usually, we’re running a marathon not a sprint.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I’m an adventurer, whether trekking a mountain, wandering the streets of a new city, or tasting a new food. While doing an internship in China, one of the doctors I observed “prescribed” more dancing to a patient. Since then, I’ve learned the Texas Two Step and love it. I believe that having variety in our lives keeps us excited and passionate about the future.
