Why did you become an acupuncturist?
My choice to become an acupuncturist has been a pursuit of passion. As have many others, I have repeatedly observed and experienced how Traditional Chinese Medicine, which has existed for thousands of years, is a compassionate and effective healing method.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
By combining my knowledge and experience as both a Western and Eastern healthcare practitioner, I serve my clients well. I have found that many routine health problems and chronic conditions for which drugs and surgery are only partially effective or not effective at all benefit from Traditional Chinese Medicine.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I am in awe of this incredible medicine every moment of my practice and life. Every day I see what can be construed as minor or even major miracles, whether it is alleviation of stress, anxiety, depression, acute or chronic pain, or the breaking up of vicious cycles of illness and emotional turmoil. Having been an RN in critical and emergency care for decades, and now as a practitioner of Oriental medicine for more than 10 years, I have developed a deep confidence in the effectiveness of this medicine. Its success lies in its emphasis on identifying and treating the root cause as well as the symptoms of a problem.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
The biggest misconception regarding Oriental medicine is that it is mostly a treatment for pain. Often, it is regarded as a last-resort treatment. Oriental medicine needs to become well known as a truly preventive and first-resort medicine that covers a wide range of health issues.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I am constantly working to maintain and improve my health and wellbeing. I get acupuncture, chiropractic, massage, and craniosacral treatments regularly. I take herbs when needed. I see an MD who practices functional medicine. I take regular supplements and eat only organic and whole foods that I cook at home. I bike and walk regularly. I start my mornings slowly, making a wonderful breakfast, having quiet, meditative time to myself. Most days I practice a rather simple and short qigong routine.

Fast facts
Practice type: Hybrid
Specialties: Allergies, back pain, general wellness, headaches / migraines, sexual conditions
Styles: Five Element acupuncture, Japanese acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
Chinese medicine has always been of interest to me since my early twenties, when I was suffering terrible migraine headaches. As I got older, I had more and more health issues that negatively affected my everyday living experience. Time and again, Western medicine failed me. My acupuncturist helped me heal in ways that Western medicine told me were impossible. After my son was born, which was thought to be impossible, I was convinced that I wanted to be part of this healing for other people.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
My acupuncture experience has offered me a wide range of methods and treatments. I have had the good fortune to study Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese herbs, Five Element acupuncture, Kiiko Matsumoto-style Japanese acupuncture, and tuina massage. I also spent many hours in the service of a local veteran’s hospital that has helped me understand different levels of pain, both emotionally and physically. I am always looking for new things to learn and am always amazed at the way this medicine helps individuals heal on so many levels.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
To me, Chinese medicine offers everyone the gentlest, most effective treatment for many ailments that commonly affect people. Many of these ailments, left untreated by Western medicine, turn into major medical problems in the patient’s future. Knowing that I’m helping people potentially avoid these major problems—without side effects, medications, or major expense—gives me the highest reward.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
The biggest misconception of some is that acupuncture needs to be proven effective. It’s my experience, after seeing people suffering from the side effects of Western medicinal treatments, that it’s Western medicine that should prove itself. Chinese medicine has been treating people for centuries and has had thousands of masters adding to the medicine along the way. Western medicine has been studied for only several hundred years, and offers chemical compounds that treat symptoms of disease while causing many other issues that then get treated with other chemicals. The choice seems clear to me. Chinese medicine can take an already healthy person and make him or her healthier. Whereas, Western medicine takes healthy people, gives them chemical compounds, and makes them unhealthier.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
How do I stay healthy? The same way I tell my patients—I see my acupuncturist regularly, and exercise and eat well.

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
We became acupuncturists because of our combined positive experiences with Traditional Chinese Medicine, our desire to pursue a deeply meaningful career, and our academic interest in a philosophical medicine.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
We practice classical Chinese medicine, an unabbreviated form of Chinese medicine. In classical practice, medicine and health are regarded as arts that are informed by an understanding of our place in the natural world and each individual patient. We treat by choosing among 74 channel systems, using a straightforward, elegant, and thorough understanding of human physiology and pathology as laid out in a variety of classical texts.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
The most rewarding moment for us is when a patient begins to notice the subtle but pervasive changes in his or her daily experience. As patients progress through treatment and become more deeply connected to themselves, they generally begin to feel less divided between “mind and body.” This is a beautiful and humbling time for us as practitioners. It’s an honor to be a part of a person’s process as they become an assimilated whole, casting off pain, darkness, and old misconceptions in favor of a belief in their own capacity to heal.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
The idea that acupuncture and herbalism are only for a certain kind of person is probably the saddest misconception about the medicine. The belief of who this “certain kind” of person is varies. Some people think you have to be rich, or young, or a hippie, or an atheist, or a Buddhist, or have back pain. Acupuncture and herbalism are for anyone who’s interested—and the medicine can help an uninterested person. Certainly active participation yields better results than resistance or disinterest, but we’ve seen skeptical and disbelieving people have excellent results.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
We live as simply as possible, staying connected to our resources and our values. As small business owners ourselves, we support other small businesses so that we can help to grow healthy, vibrant, and self-sufficient communities. We love to cook, using foods we grew and locally grown foods. If we eat out, we favor neighborhood eateries. We believe in the importance of receiving the medicine that we practice, and both get weekly acupuncture treatments and custom herbal formulas. We also get monthly massages. Living in the mountains of Virginia means that we have access to incredible outdoor recreation opportunities. We spend as much time as we can on the Appalachian Trail. We also enjoy practicing yoga and qigong, but get much of our exercise keeping up with our toddler.

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
Just like the gentleman on the razor commercials, I was a satisfied customer. I first received acupuncture more than 20 years ago and loved the benefits I could see and feel in body, mind, and spirit. I had been preparing to begin my studies to become a certified nurse midwife, but soon realized that a career in acupuncture would allow me to serve a greater variety of clients in a greater range of circumstances. I loved discovering that I could help the body self-heal rather than becoming another provider of procedures and pills.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I understand and like science, and I am able to explain the sometimes mystical-sounding world of acupuncture in clear non-mystical language. I continue to receive acupuncture treatment regularly and know what it is like to be on the patient side of the equation. I’ve thought a lot and written a lot about the policy side of the field.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love working with people of all ages and circumstances. I enjoy getting to know what makes people tick. I enjoy seeing people thrive and regain good health, often after years of illness or just not feeling well.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
That it is primarily used for pain.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I take a long walk with Buford, the dog, every day and I make an effort to get a reasonable amount of sleep. I eat three mostly healthy meals per day. I take yoga three times a week. And I try to laugh and spend time with family and friends regularly, and I get outside as much as I can.

Fast facts
Practice type: Hybrid
Specialties: Depression, general wellness, musculoskeletal pain, skin conditions, women’s health
Styles: Auricular (ear) acupuncture, Japanese acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
Chinese Medicine has been a significant part of my life since about 2004. I was looking at a somewhat dismal medical diagnosis and felt compelled to try something different from pharmaceuticals. I found an acupuncturist/Chinese herbalist and six months later I found myself without symptoms. I knew that I had found something worth sharing and decided that pursuing my own formal training was one of the best ways I could give back.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I’ve worked with a wide variety of populations throughout my life and I’ve shared and learned from all of them. The one thing that everyone seems to need, regardless of what they do or how they live their life, is a safe and comfortable healing space where physical, mental and emotional experiences can be expressed and resolved. I do my best to provide that kind of space to everyone who I support with acupuncture.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
There’s nothing better than seeing someone get off the table feeling more like themselves, whether that be without pain, without stress or simply more like their “usual, happy self.” It’s so humbling and rewarding to support others as they begin to see and engage in their own healing and overall wellbeing, and to see those positive effects trickle into all other areas of their life as well.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
While the overall impression of the power behind acupuncture continues to change, many people still believe that it really only can help them with pain, specifically musculoskeletal pain. Acupuncture is really more about promoting life. This can be understood in a literal sense, as it does improve fertility in both men and women, but it also means that instead of dealing with seasonal allergies, emotional turmoil or digestive issues as permanent aspects of your existence, acupuncture can bring about bigger change so that you can bring your focus away from what ails you and back to the life you want to live.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
Staying healthy involves many areas of your life. I maintain a “nutritionally balanced life” by keeping things in some kind of balance. I do my best to eat more vegetables than carbs or meats, incorporate meditation and either tai chi, yoga or qigong into my daily routine to keep me focused and centered, and get outside and play as often as I can. I also set aside time to laugh and feel supported by the people I love as well as time to support them. Life can be crazy, but making sure that you give yourself the best chance to feel balanced will allow you to take part in what really matters to you.

Fast facts
Practice type: Hybrid
Specialties: Back pain, general wellness, musculoskeletal pain, sports injuries, stress
Styles: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), trigger point acupuncture

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
Wanting to help athletes and weekend warriors, I’ve found that acupuncture is one of the best natural medicines for pain management and treating stress. Unlike pharmaceutical drugs, acupuncture and herbs have limited to no side effects, which is very important to a patient’s wellness.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
Having a niche in pain management and stress allows me to focus my treatments on specific conditions. I also like watching TV and sports. You don’t have to be a hippie or hipster to enjoy acupuncture.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love getting to know my patients, figuring out the best way to treat them, and seeing how excited and happy they are when they start seeing results.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
That it hurts, and that it’s a bunch of mumbo jumbo. It’s good to have some sensation from acupuncture, but pain should not be one of them. Also, just because we don’t know exactly how acupuncture works doesn’t mean it doesn’t work. I’ve seen it work for a lot of people.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
Eat good foods and exercise my body and mind.

Practice type: Hybrid
Specialties: Arthritis, brain injuries, epilepsy, pediatric conditions, women’s health,
Styles: Herbal therapy, Japanese acupuncture, pediatric acupuncture

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
After I got myself much healthier and stronger through a macrobiotic diet, I was introduced to acupressure and Shiatsu (Ohashi and Masunaga were my teachers). I saw its effectiveness and kept studying deeper into acupuncture and herbal medicine. As I had a very poor diet as a kid, herbs have been very valuable in my adult years.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I have been a licensed acupuncturist for 28 years. My Japanese style includes a lot of massaging the reflex areas and points to feel if they give the desired release. I look for root causes, so I ask people about traumas, physical or emotional, illnesses, surgeries and accidents, even ones that they think are behind them.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
Every person is so different. Discovering the root of why someone’s life force is blocked, sometimes under layers of other symptoms or prescription drugs, is very rewarding and puts me in touch with this miraculous phenomena: Life. Acupuncture makes people and acupuncturists more openminded and connected to what we really are.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
Needles are hair-like antennas. I call them i.s.o. needles. In hospitals, the same word “needle” is used for injections or inoculations, which cut holes in your body and hurt, and sometimes make you sick too. I have had people who would never allow another needle because they have had too many, but they let me work with acupressure, moxa, cupping or a little hammer for superficial stimulation of the skin. This produces a very relaxing and healing effect.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I do a five-minute qigong routine (Qi Fusion style) and a few salutations to the sun. Also, sitting meditation, Vipassana, and personal-growth meetings with small groups. Gardening and cooking with my own grown produce and wild vegetables is very fun and relaxing for me.

What conditions do you prefer to treat?
Traumatic brain injuries or neck injuries because they are so insidious. They can cause personality changes and great mental stress. Medical drugs do not seem to enhance quality of life, or the accident is forgotten but the person has bad problems from it—from insomnia to sleeping too much to confusion.

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
To help everyone find balance and create health. To educate that we can heal ourselves. To improve community and personal health in a tangible, clear way.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I easily translate Chinese medical theory into everyday metaphors. I make this medicine accessible and understandable. I help you understand what is happening with your body in a quiet and gentle way that allows for deep healing, compassion and understanding.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love helping people feel better. I love seeing the “aha” as my patients understand and believe that they can have a better quality of life. I enjoy educating my patients on diet, exercise and mental skills that allow for lower stress and greater health.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
“Acupuncture is only for pain. Acupuncture doesn’t work long term. Acupuncture helps that?” These are the common misconceptions I hear about acupuncture. Acupuncture is for wellness; it’s for stress relief, insomnia, allergies, etc. Basically, if you’re out of balance, acupuncture can help. Please, just ask!

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I live my medicine. I take Chinese herbs when I get sick, I use acupuncture to manage my health. I use pediatric acupuncture and herbs with my children. For me, this medicine is the first and usually the only medicine I use. I eat well, exercise, sleep well and take care of my mental wellbeing.

Fast facts
Practice type: Hybrid
Specialties: Digestive conditions, headaches / migraines, musculoskeletal pain, stress, women’s health
Styles: Community acupuncture, Japanese acupuncture, trigger point acupuncture

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
Born into a family of health professionals, my interest in holistic healthcare began in 1999 when friends and family members sought support in navigating health issues, some of which were not responding to Western medicine. While I believe the cornerstone to a happy and healthy life are choices made on a day-to-day basis, I became an acupuncturist to aid others in healing with this powerful classical East Asian medicine. I founded Vivacity Acupuncture & Holistic Health Care to provide high-quality and affordable treatment.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
What distinguishes me most from other acupuncturists is my eclectic treatment approach. I studied intensively with world-renowned master acupuncturist Kiiko Matsumoto. My practice is largely based upon her innovative clinical strategies and incorporates my background in nutrition, fitness and herbology allowing me to utilize the best of both Eastern and Western medicine. In addition to my private practice, I work alongside orthopedic surgeons and therapists in an integrative clinic. In both settings, I am intent upon providing self-care options for people who would like to be proactive about maintaining their health outside of the treatment room.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I thrive on the investigative nature of customizing treatment to each individual. I am driven by getting to the bottom or root of a condition so that my treatments yield sustainable healing. Due to this approach, I typically see a 50-90% improvement within the first three-to-five treatments.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
A common misconception about acupuncture is that it primarily, or even exclusively, treats pain conditions. While it is true that acupuncture is very useful for this, it is a traditional medicine used for hundreds of years to treat every health issue known. Many of my patients initially come to me to relieve pain, but are thrilled to realize that since acupuncture treatment is holistic many other health concerns or imbalances are being alleviated at the same time. This realization often leads to a lasting interest in addressing any other conditions that arise that they previously had no idea acupuncture would be helpful for.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
Despite a lifelong interest in health and wellbeing, nothing has had a greater effect on me than living in New York. Life and work in this city places many demands on my health, and it has placed me in contact with a wide diversity of people and myriad approaches to healing illuminating both ancient and modern wisdom. My experiences over the years led me to realize that even seemingly simple choices every day can be significant boosts to your health. I am an avid cyclist, maintain a regular yoga practice, and I pay attention to my diet and lifestyle. I also receive regular acupuncture and bodywork treatments! Generally, I shy away from being overly rigid or fanatical about health and healing because I realize we are all leading different lives.

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
I became an acupuncturist to preserve and maintain my own health and the health of others. I truly enjoy making acupuncture accessible to my community.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
The mission of my clinic, Costa Acupuncture, is to provide safe, affordable, effective care to everyone. We provide affordable treatments tailored to each individual’s needs.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
Providing highly effective acupuncture treatments that are affordable to just about everyone is the most rewarding aspect of my work. Acupuncture is effective for many conditions. My goal is to make it available to as many patients as possible.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
New patients tend to think acupuncture is going to feel similar to getting an injection or blood drawn with needles that are much thicker than those used in acupuncture treatments. Acupuncture needles are almost hair thin and most patients barely feel them at all.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
Self care through meditation, eating a nutritious diet, and getting adequate rest. I use acupuncture, herbs, and nutritional supplements to support wellbeing when everything is going well and when things get out of balance.
