Why did you become an acupuncturist?
Twenty-seven years ago I saw acupuncture work—and it was dramatic. A friend’s six-year-old daughter had asthma and the family managed her condition with Chinese medicine. It was amazing to watch. I would give her a ride sometimes to the acupuncturist and sit with her as she had her treatments. The acupuncturist would put the needles in and then we’d talk. I could hear her breathing shift and congestion clear. She was relaxed, and I was in awe. I became an acupuncturist to help people tap into their innate capacity to heal. I’m still in awe.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
My aim is to help ordinary, everyday people be healthy. Community acupuncture enables me to do this. As an acupuncturist, I base my work on the age-old principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. I have practiced and studied Asian medicine since 1998 and have additional certificates in Sotai, tuina, and Shiatsu. I work to hire and train outstanding acupuncturists who provide care that makes a lasting difference in people’s lives.

In addition to my work as a community acupuncturist, I am a KRI Certified Kundalini Yoga instructor and lead a yogic lifestyle. I’m an advocate for birth as a normal physiologic process and work to empower women to have safe and healthy pregnancies. I’ve trained to be a midwife focusing on out-of-hospital deliveries at birth centers and in the home. I teach childbirth education classes and attend births as a doula.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love watching my clinic’s front-desk staff witness the deep healing I’ve come to expect from acupuncture. Seeing their amazement helps me stay open. I love having so many different people in my life sharing what is truly meaningful. I love knowing that pain is universal and that we may think we have nothing in common, but we have that. And even more than pain, we share the capacity to heal. I love how simple acupuncture is and how easy it can be to give people a great treatment. I love training new acupuncturists and showing them how they can really make a difference by treating people like themselves in their community. I love bringing ease to people’s lives and being part of the solution. I love watching my patients sleep, all together, in one amazing acu-nap room.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
The biggest misconception I hear about acupuncture is that conventional medical doctors are “against” acupuncture. There are tens of thousands of research articles about acupuncture published in the National Institutes of Health research database Pubmed, the go-to source for all medical information. And there are 3,000 years of documented experience from doctors treating patients with acupuncture and Chinese medicine. Acupuncture doesn’t have to be exotic or weird. And I’ve never heard of a doctor demanding a patient be against it.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I kiss my dog. And I take time to meditate and do yoga most days. I eat well and simply focusing on eating what’s in season and grown by people I know. And I have work I love!
