Why did you become an acupuncturist?
My interest in alternative health began at an early age by way of my eldest brother. His concern for my sweet tooth led us on a journey to health food stores and to reading a book called Sugar Blues by William Dufty, a gift when I was only eight years old. In my 20s, as a hobby, I began counseling people on proper supplementation and diet, and I worked with people with a variety of conditions such as cancer and multiple sclerosis. In my 30s, I trained as a Reiki practitioner and began seeing the everyday miracle of healing touch. I felt that Chinese medicine would be the perfect next stage in my path because it integrates energy medicine with herbal, dietary, and lifestyle coaching.
What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I recently completed a post-graduate clinical integration mentorship with renowned Five Element acupuncture practitioner, scholar, author, and teacher Lonny Jarrett. My continued studies with Mr. Jarrett combine ancient tradition and theory with a modern perspective to create the highest context for an individual’s healing. I’m excited about practicing at Zen Shiatsu, where the environment resonates with my current studies and perspective.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
One of the greatest joys of my life is talking with people about their health. I have seen many everyday miracles, and I really love participating with people on this journey.
What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
It can be frustrating when a patient comes to me who was told by a healthcare professional that acupuncture is a placebo. By now, there are enough medical studies that prove acupuncture’s efficacy, and we need to spread the word about that.
How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I have a daily yoga practice and I follow a food-as-medicine diet. I love cooking and living in one of the nicest neighborhoods in Chicago, near the lake.
