Why did you become an acupuncturist?
It was my deep spiritual calling since I was a little girl. Ever since I can remember, I have had a passion for healing. I started studying nutrition in high school and really understood that we are what we eat, and continued my studies through college. In the greater picture, I now know that we are what we take in through all of our senses (what we see, watch, read, eat, drink, smell, hear, feel, etc.) Our environment shapes our energy, which is a primary understanding in TCM.

I feel that my place in the healthcare system is to help fill in the gaps where modern mainstream medicine has fallen short. I focus on helping people harness their body’s innate healing energy. I help identify appropriate lifestyle modifications and diet changes along with acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, and all that is TCM, so that the body can heal itself—whether from chronic pain, emotional/spiritual unrest, or other physical discomforts.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I offer comprehensive care that includes acupuncture and other treatments such as cupping, tuina massage, gua sha, and herbal therapy. I also include lifestyle counseling, because in this day and age, bad habits performed on a daily basis can reinforce the undesirable symptoms that someone is coming to see me for. I also have a bachelor’s degree in nutrition, which I incorporate into the lifestyle counseling. I spend time educating people on how their bodies work, what is out of balance, and what steps are required to rebalance.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I enjoy giving people tools to change their health and their lives. I love to see people’s bodies responding so well to treatments and all of their hard work. I love seeing people who have had truly life-changing things happen in the treatment room, and watching them become more healthy and build a healthy foundation for their future. It makes me so proud to be a part of this medicine. I am passionate about the results of preventive care and love teaching, assisting, and guiding people toward a joy-filled life.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
One of the biggest barriers to this medicine is that it is so foreign to many western minds. Many people come into my office thinking they “need to believe in it” in order for it to work. I have many people come into my clinic desperate to feel better, saying they “will try anything.” I even have people admit that they don’t think they believe acupuncture works. My answer always is, “You don’t need to believe in acupuncture for it to work. It’s going to work any way.”

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I practice what I preach. I fill myself with nourishing food and thoughts, and I connect to the world the way I need to in order to feel full of love. I enjoy spending time in nature and with my family. I ground myself with yoga, and with being creative in the kitchen and with projects in my life. I also spend time with my dear friends and nurture the relationships in my life. Finally, I make sure to go to my acupuncturist, massage therapist, and other licensed practitioners that help me keep my qi healthy and flowing freely. This is extremely important since I work with many people on a daily basis.
