Why did you become an acupuncturist?
For many great reasons, I decided to become an acupuncturist and make these studies a huge part of my life. But the main reason was that I wanted to help people understand their bodies better. Our bodies have amazing abilities, and it important to understand how yours functions to the best of its ability.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I have studied both Western psychology as well as Chinese medicine. This knowledge gives me a different approach to acupuncture than many other practitioners.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
It is such an amazing feeling to see the process of healing. There is no way to not enjoy your work when you feel that you are constantly helping people.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
I constantly hear that acupuncture only works as a placebo. This truly is a misconception, and many facts and studies can prove that. Acupuncture works on many different levels, including physical, mental, and biological.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
There are many ways to stay healthy, but personally, I have dedicated a lot of time to the study and practice of martial arts. I also enjoy spending time creating exercise programs that focus on health and maintenance for your body.

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
I had never believed in acupuncture until I had it done. How I felt during and after that first treatment changed me. I knew I had to learn everything about it!

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
My intent, style, intuition, technique, and passion truly make each treatment unique and set me apart from other practitioners.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I am doing what I love—spending time with people, listening, being hands-on, and helping them heal with acupuncture and massage.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
That acupuncturists only have a few months of training, that acupuncture is unexplained voodoo medicine, and that the acupuncture needles hurt.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
Acupuncture and cupping are my favorite ways to keep my body healthy. Spending time and enjoying the people I care about keep my mind and heart heathy.

What conditions can acupuncture help with?
Everything! You name it and we can do acupuncture for it. Try us!

Fast facts
Practice type: Private
Specialties: General wellness
Styles: Five Element acupuncture

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
I have always had a quick and curious mind, and therefore have always been fascinated with the sciences and especally how the human body functions. Yet I have also always maintained that behind the physical body is something more ineffable but of equal importance—indeed more important—than just the physical well being. No modality is more effective than acupuncture in its ability to treat a person simultaneously on all levels.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
My practice incorporates the system of Stems and Branches, ancient knowledge that allows me to treat in accordance with known cycles of time to ensure that acupuncture is administered when it is most powerful and beneficial for each patient. Only a small fraction of practitioners are working with the Stems and Branches although this system has been known about since ancient times and was written about in the old books. It allows the acupuncturist to gain deeper insight into the causes of diseases and each individual patient’s pathway back to health.

I graduated first class with an honors degree from the International College of Oriental Medicine UK, the only institution that currently teaches the Stems and Branches method. Training at ICOM lasts four years, double the amount of time required at other UK institutions.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love it because on any particular day, a patient will present with something unique. No two patients are ever alike and not even the same patient will present the same diagnosis on another day of treatment. This is because an acupuncturist is always changing and adapting to the needs of the moment—listening, receptive and alert to the flux of a patient’s ever-changing qi and supporting where he or she feels it is beneficial do to so—to create better balance in the individual. It makes for fascinating “detective work,” which is always alive and never dull. The close contact with patients and their health is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
People say or think that acupuncture is “just for pain relief” or “only good for this or that condition.” It is misleading to utter such statements. Acupuncture treats people not diseases, and it treats the whole person, including the mind. (Why are we all so “disease” focused?) Acupuncure is good at keeping you well—that is what it does so well! It is as preventive as it is curative. It makes you stronger and overall more balanced, with all your symptoms as part of the picture.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
It is a lifelong journey to walk the talk, to put our knowledge into practice, but doing so is something I relish because it is part of what makes life meaningful to me. I feel life is but a classroom—we are here to learn a thing or two about our soul’s destiny and take it further in some way. I try to engage in a holistic form of exercise to compliment the holism of acupuncture. Yoga is my choice, as well as walking in nature. I like to spend time outside observing the processes of life unfold as we go through the seasons. I try to imagine what our forefathers were thinking when they created this medicine in the first place. It makes me feel connected to something bigger, a lineage that cumulatively is greater than my own lifetime can achieve. I find time to be calm and at peace before each treatment day in order to be as receptive and focused as possible on the needs of the patient. I eat lots of fresh and organic food. I strongly believe that it’s not difficult to be healthy—our bodies strive for it on a daily basis. We just have to learn how to not stand in the way, to understand the signals that our bodies are trying to give us when we experience symptoms.

Practice type: Hybrid
Specialties: Back pain, depression, headaches / migraines, musculoskeletal pain, women’s health
Styles: Auricular (ear) acupuncture, Five Element acupuncture, Japanese acupuncture

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
Acupuncture and other holistic modalities were able to restore my own health, after five years of Western medicine failed. I have devoted my life to learning and educating others seeking a whole-health model.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
In addition to having over 20 years of experience, I generally treat one patient at a time. I believe in giving each person my full attention, and giving people time to discuss everything they need to share about their health, and to discuss other lifestyle habits (diet / food preparation, exercise, etc.). Additionally, I often incorporate advanced bodywork techniques into acupuncture treatments.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I enjoy connecting with people, truly listening and caring. Health is more than just symptoms. It’s really a reflection of all of your life, stresses, and habits!

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
Many people are worried that acupuncture is painful. The Japanese style that I have trained in is very comfortable. Most people laugh and say, “That’s it?” They imagine much more sensation. Also, people think you must come endlessly. Often my clients are better in three treatments, and then return as needed.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I enjoy organic food, juicing and cooking fresh meals. I have two dogs that I walk constantly, and I enjoy light workouts at the gym and maintain a very strong yoga practice (including instructing).

Fast facts
Practice type: Hybrid
Specialties: General wellness
Styles: Classical Chinese medicine

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
I always wanted to practice medicine. I studied pre-med at Dartmouth College, and in my junior year, I went to Calcutta to work in a street clinic. I met Mother Theresa and volunteered in her children’s shelter—in the process getting extremely sick. After hospitalization back in the U.S., I struggled with chronic illness. My road to wellbeing began then, and Chinese medicine played a significant, transformative role. I know from personal experience its capacity to benefit patients in myriad ways—not only in their bodies, but also in their experience of life, of themselves, and of their possibilities.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
My acupuncture practice offers nearly 20 years of experience in complementary medicine. I have practiced yoga, meditation and bodywork since 1996, and been a licensed massage therapist in New York for 11 years. I routinely incorporate craniosacral therapy, Eastern bodywork, and qigong healing into acupuncture treatments. I intern with Tom Bisio, an internationally renowned acupuncturist, martial arts practitioner, teacher and author, to continue my post-graduate studies. My medical qigong training began in 2000 with Master Yuwen Ru, a Tai Chi master and healer treating complicated illness.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
Chinese medicine is meaningful both in theory and application. I’m grateful to share its tools and insight with patients choosing to explore this powerful path to good health. I love doing the work, being a resource and seeing people feel better. It’s a privilege to engage with each person’s unique challenges, strengths and symptom picture as we work together to cultivate real wellbeing.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
My father is a Western physician—old school and reasonably skeptical. He’s asked me thought-provoking questions over the years, and I’ve grown in both my willingness to answer and my general appreciation for people who want to know more about this very foreign medicine. The most common question I’ve heard is, “Isn’t it all just the placebo effect?” My usual answer is, “Well, acupuncture works for animals, who don’t experience that phenomenon.” Then I elaborate on how recent brain imaging studies, including at Harvard’s Mass General Hospital, show consistent and distinct neurological activity when patients receive acupuncture. These types of studies are increasing in number and may represent a more effective look at the mechanisms that make this medicine work than previous double-blind trials.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
Daily meditation, good work, family time, laughter, good food, good friends, qigong treatments, acupuncture as needed; and listening to music, singing, writing, taking pictures, learning, keeping an open mind, and trying to cultivate appreciation for life’s ups and downs all help me feel healthy. Qigong movement, kitchen dancing, gentle yoga, breathing, and walking often are important too. I try to be relaxed about my health routines, because that’s a big part of wellbeing—being friendly with ourselves, feeling comfortable in our own skins, learning how to support our best intentions in any given moment. I think about what I read once, when I was allergic to everything: “It’s better to eat pizza with friends than sprouts alone.” Now I eat pizza.

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
Acupuncture has, for most of my life, been my go-to source for wellness, be it preventative care or management of acute symptoms or pain. Through my experience as a patient, I became awed by the body’s incredible potential for health as I witnessed many of my own chronic issues disappear with just a little coaxing from needles, moxa, and bodywork. I became an acupuncturist to share that awe with my community, and offer an alternative to the one-size-fits-all, toxic side-effects ridden forms of healthcare which are unfortunately most accessible. Acupuncture can be, and should be, available to everyone!

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I strive to be flexible and open in my approach to treatment. While there is certainly something to be said for firmly adhering to specific protocols from one tradition, I feel like there are too many brilliant variations on the theme of natural healing to not be constantly expanding and incorporating new ideas. If there is one thing I’ve learned from working with people it’s that each person is unique, with a unique background, identity, and health history. I intend to honor that individuality and meet you where you are in each moment, drawing from my full range of education and experience to craft the best, tailor-made treatment possible for you.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
One of the most common things I hear from new patients is that acupuncture is their “last straw.” They’re aching for a baby, or they’ve been suffering from excruciating cramps or digestive issues, or coping with a nagging pain from an old injury and just can’t take it anymore. They’ve tried a multitude of other professionals for their condition and have gotten either periodic relief or no relief at all, so they’ve decided to throw all caution to the wind and try that crazy ancient getting-poked-with-needles thing—and it works! One of my dearest colleagues calls this the “wow factor.” I’m not sure if it’s more a thrill for me or my patients, but to know that I am able to facilitate that sort of tremendous healing change and help to return confidence in people’s bodies is an incredible thing.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
The most frustrating misconception I hear about acupuncture is that it is just for rich people/”new age” people/women/men/insert other limiting stereotype here. The question of healthcare affordability is extremely salient, and it is disappointing that there are not more practitioners who are willing to take part in the discussion. I impart to my patients the vital importance of taking care of themselves, even though it often requires financial expenditures to do so. However, I make every effort to work with each person to maximize their treatment options in a way that is both effective and comfortable for their wallet. As for the other stereotypes, the only way to know if acupuncture is, or is not, for you is to try it out!

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I’ve done a lot of extra training in whole food nutrition, so healthy food—from seed to table—is a big deal for me. I also train in Muay Thai for exercise and a powerful release of energy, spend as much time as possible outside, and surround myself with laughter and a loving community.

In addition to being an acupuncturist, you are also a doula. Do you recommend acupuncture to women during pregnancy?
Acupuncture is not only safe, but can be extraordinarily effective during pregnancy, from ensuring conception through managing nausea and aches and pains, all the way to delivery and postpartum recovery. During labor, acupuncture is tremendously helpful for getting things started and moving along smoothly, as well as being an adjunct to doula support for pain management and emotional relaxation once labor is fully underway. I am thrilled to be able to combine my experience as a birth doula, massage therapist, and acupuncturist in working with moms and their partners to facilitate a natural, easy pregnancy from pre-conception to birth and beyond!
