Why did you become an acupuncturist?
After months of back pain with no relief from various Western treatments, I saw a flier from a nearby acupuncture clinic. I decided to give it a try, hoping for relief from my pain, and got so much more out of it. The experience transformed my life and I became so fascinated with the process that I enrolled in acupuncture college—at the age of 60!—to find out more. This has become my passion. I am thrilled to be able to introduce new patients to the healing powers of Chinese medicine.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
For me, acupuncture is about nurturing the community. I treat my patients in a peaceful group setting, and I welcome all who come to my door. My sliding scale fees allow me to treat a wide variety of people who normally would not have expected to be able to afford acupuncture. By removing the barrier of cost, I am able to provide healing for any who desire it.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
It makes my heart happy to look out into my clinic and see a room full of peaceful, sleeping people! Patients are so appreciative, and often pleasantly surprised at acupuncture’s effectiveness. My work inspires me to be a better person, and I am so grateful to be able to help others.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
There are two major misconceptions that I hear. The first is that it hurts. There might be a sense of heaviness or mild achiness around the needles, but it rarely causes pain. In truth, most people sleep right through a treatment! The second misconception is that acupuncture is only affordable for people with high-paying jobs, or a lot of disposable income. But acupuncture does not need to be expensive in order to be effective. The community acupuncture model makes acupuncture accessible to the entire community.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I integrate the concepts and practices of Chinese medicine into my everyday life. I receive regular acupuncture treatments and massage therapy. I also meditate and practice qigong.

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
I had a premed degree and wanted to choose a profession from which I would not burn out, as each patient is totally different from any other. After using natural healthcare for my family for 20 years, this seemed like a perfect choice.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I treat every patient as an individual, and take them from where they are to where they want to be. I continue learning in order to help increase my knowledge. I treat emotional issues, fertility, and more. I have a certificate in Oriental reproductive medicine, which requires increased knowledge in that area.

I using vibration and cold laser when needed, after many hours of study using them. I also use herbs and homeopathy as needed to increase resolution of problems more quickly. I help with symptoms in a natural way. I can help with almost any problem, and will refer out if needed. All ages benefit, as do problems from head to toe.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I enjoy helping patients become pain free, have peace of mind, and resolve problems of all kinds. This is a fulfilling way to spend my time.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
I do not hear misconceptions much.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I practice qigong as a certified instructor, eat well, exercise with my dog, and do Pilates. We all need exercise, to eat well, and to drink plenty of water. I could not function at work without doing so.

Fast facts
Practice type: Private
Specialties: General wellness, facial rejuvenation acupuncture
Styles: Facial rejuvenation acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), trigger point acupuncture

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
Teaching yoga for 10 years made it easy for me to see where my passion lies—in making a difference for people. I loved (and still do) seeing the shift in people, physically, mentally and emotionally from the time they come into a yoga class to the time they leave. I soon realized I wanted a full time career that was designed around making a difference for people, especially in their wellbeing. Being a person who has preferred alternative medicine to more traditional routes for many years, becoming a Doctor of Oriental Medicine was an easy choice. I have never been more fulfilled in a job in my life. I love my patients. I enjoy working with them to make their lives more wonderful!

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I am an advocate for the wellness of my patients. I prefer to work with people who want to get well and stay well, and who are willing to look at lifestyle and dietary changes if that’s what’s needed to get the results they desire. I bring yoga into my practice when it’s appropriate for a patient—for example, for injury rehabilitation or stress and anxiety. I bring all I know to the table to help my patients achieve their desired goals. I am a registered yoga instructor, and am certified in point injection therapy. These modalities, in addition to acupuncture and TCM, can make profound and lasting changes in one’s daily health and wellbeing.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
What I enjoy most about my work is hearing from patients how good they are feeling, and seeing the shift in not only their physical condition but also their mental and emotional wellbeing.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
That it’s painful or scary, and that it’s only good for pain. I can’t tell you how many times a new patient has sighed in relief when I show them an acupuncture needle for the first time and tap it gently into a point. “Is that it?” is what I most often hear, usually followed by a laugh of relief. Acupuncture does not have to be painful. Most often patients feel extremely relaxed and even sleep during treatments. The other misconception is that acupuncture is only good for treating pain. While it is a fantastic tool to treat pain, acupuncture works on nearly everything. It treats holistically, looking at the big picture and not just treating the symptoms. I have treated patients with issues ranging from allergies to vertigo and everything in between. If you’re not sure if acupuncture can help what you are dealing with, just call me for a free consultation and find out!

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
Staying healthy is important to me. It is difficult for all of us to find the balance in our lives all the time. I use yoga to help me stay centered. I get out on my paddle board or kayak with my husband and daughter and breathe fresh air and enjoy the water as often as possible—that is my restorative place. I try to move a bit every day. I try to watch my diet, making healthy choices the majority of my diet with the occasional chocolate bar or dessert. I try to get to bed by 10 o’clock, drink lots of water, take necessary supplements and Chinese herbs. But my main drive is always balance, in all areas of my life, which is a lifelong journey.

Fast facts

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
I studied premed after an accomplished 15-year career in design and graphic arts. I found that my creative drive was incredibly strong, which led to professional success as a designer but kept taking me back to the body, to health and, ultimately, to Oriental medicine. I understand and deeply appreciate physical and physiological life processes, both from a Western and Chinese medical model, which keeps me focused on my patients and grounded in my approach.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
My desire and ultimate goal is to always be learning and expanding my understanding of Chinese medicine so that I can be a well-honed clinician for my patients. I travel regularly to study with the very best teachers in classical Chinese medicine and log more than 200 hours of didactic lecture time each year. I also spend a significant amount of time reading the latest studies and relevant materials, as well as contributing to case study presentations. By staying informed and educated, I can make a difference in my patients’ quality of care and health outcomes.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
Without a doubt, I enjoy the human connection and the challenge of developing optimal treatment strategies and regimens that, in turn, drive positive health outcomes for my patients. My patients trust me to be their partner and to help them reach their health goals and potential. When we are able to work together to do that, it is a wonderful feeling and accomplishment.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
I think the biggest misconception is that you must be a believer in acupuncture for it to be effective. There is an enormous body of scientific data showing that this is not the case. Numerous animal studies have shown a positive response without a belief system. Further, National Institutes of Health (NIH) studies have demonstrated that acupuncture may alter brain chemistry in ways that affect the body’s immune reactions, blood-pressure regulation, blood flow and temperature, and that it may aid the activity of endorphins (the body’s own pain-killing chemicals) and immune cells at specific sites in the body.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
It’s a challenge we all face, but one that is most important to rise to. I enjoy the personal tussle with trying to manage life as a mere mortal. I try to make balanced choices and create habits that best cultivate and support my health. Often, I am successful. Other times, I have to remind myself what is important and commit to my health. I exercise regularly and have a qigong and meditative practice that I routinely follow. If I am not going to value my health and make it a top priority, who will?

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
My purpose for practicing Traditional Chinese Medicine is to provide my patients with an opportunity to experience and cultivate long-term natural health. With each patient, I work to educate them about the holistic medical system of acupuncture, which is based on the inter-relationship between the laws of nature and human beings. I tailor my treatments to meet the individual needs of each patient. Whether we are working to treat chronic illness, emotional imbalance, stress or aches and pains, I approach the treatment with compassion and sincere interest in guiding my patient to a more balanced body through skilled and specific Chinese medical therapies.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I grew up in Beijing learning TCM from my grandmother and father. My education and experience in TCM has been a life-long endeavor. I believe this experience allows me to bring a unique approach to my treatment of each patient.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I enjoy seeing people get well!

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
It is not a one-hit wonder. It’s an art form. You have to be patient and the healing will come.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I love to travel up and down the California coast—it is awesome and inspiring. I find great peace in the ocean.

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
I was only able to afford acupuncture because I found Alberta Street Acupuncture in Portland, OR, which offered sliding scale services. They helped me with a number of chronic health conditions in a way that pharmaceutical drugs couldn’t. I also worked as a counselor at a detox program where NADA ear acupuncture was used on a daily basis for recovering alcoholics and heroin addicts—many with severe psychiatric conditions, some who lived on the streets. I saw how it helped them calm down, get through detox and stay engaged with recovery. These experiences radically transformed how I understood community health. I wanted to learn how to make acupuncture more accessible to everyday people, and how to facilitate the growth of community-based clinics.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
For me acupuncture is a community-building tool. Understood as such, this puts less emphasis on myself or my charisma. I’m not a guru, not going to pose as the be all and end all of your medical care. My outreach and my ability to facilitate changes in people is highly limited if I’m the only one providing acupuncture within a given community. Anything that is dependent solely on me will not be sustainable. My role therefore is not only to provide treatments, but also to get local health workers trained, and to help others establish clinics that are community-based.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
In a community clinic, it’s exciting to see diverse people of different backgrounds share a space. Several of my colleagues have started up clinics within Catholic churches, open to the public regardless of creed, for people who’ve never had access to acupuncture nor would have ever sought out or been able to afford an acupuncturist. I recently visited one of these churches, where a group of Mormons in the neighborhood started coming, and subsequently invited them to come offer a clinic in the nearby Mormon temple. Stories like this remind me that acupuncture isn’t just for well off liberals and new age folks. Acupuncture is, as has been traditionally in China, for the poor and the rich, the worker and the unemployed, the conservative and the liberal, the atheist as well as the born-again Christian. Acupuncture is for everyone. I love seeing this happen.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
That acupuncture is only for people who have disposable income or who are liberal. There’s a growing number of community acupuncture and public health clinics that offer affordable services. Some addictions and mental health programs offer ear acupuncture as an adjunct to standard treatment, many of which operate in very conservative and rural areas of the U.S. These types of clinics will continue to make acupuncture accessible to people who would probably never seek out an acupuncturist. If you can’t afford any of the acupuncturists in your town, ask them to offer affordable sliding scale or community acupuncture treatments. They need to hear from you.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
Being involved in my community while always finding time and space for solitude and nature. Have to pray. Every day.

Fast facts
Practice type: Private
Specialties: Anxiety, depression, general wellness, musculoskeletal pain, stress
Styles: Auricular acupuncture, facial rejuvenation acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
Initially I came to acupuncture for my own healing for a longstanding pain and nerve issue. Acupuncture worked when 10 years of surgery and other interventions did not. I had been in the field of social work and I discovered through acupuncture the world of mind-body healing. I enjoy helping people in their healing process, physical and emotional.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I have an integrative practice using a variety of modalities—acupuncture, energy medicine, micro-current electricity, craniosacral therapy, acupressure, and other techniques. I am able to draw upon many skills and techniques to assist each person according to what is best for them. I only see one person at a time so everyone receives my full attention.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I have been practicing for 18 years (since 1993). I am fascinated by my work and thoroughly enjoy it. I continue to grow through continuing education. Most recently I have been working with indigenous healers in Mexico. My favorite part is the relationships I have with my clients.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
The biggest misconception that I hear is that acupuncture hurts. I have a gentle approach and have treated children as well as adults with acupuncture. While a fear of needles is understandable, acupuncture can be done in a gentle, non-invasive way.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I do my best to “walk my talk.” I exercise, eat well, dance, spend time in nature and enjoy social time as well as quiet time. I take vacations to rejuvenate myself. I receive bodywork sessions regularly. I enjoy my life!
