Fast facts
Practice type: Private
Specialties: Fibromyalgia, headaches / migraines, insomnia, menopause, musculoskeletal pain
Styles: Herbal therapy, Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), blood chemistry analysis

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
I studied Chinese medicine because it is a comprehensive medical system. I did not want to treat patients with alternative methods using a Western allopathic diagnosis. Acupuncture provides me with the science and theory to arrive at a diagnosis based on principles of Chinese medicine alone. Acupuncture offers a completely different view and understanding of the body and its systems. Because of this, I knew that it would provide me with the tools to diagnose and treat many conditions that continue to baffle other popular medical approaches. Every day the results continue to be inspiring, even after 15 years in practice. These amazing results translate into a better quality of life for my patients as well as continuously feeding my passion for this approach to optimal health.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I love my work. I hear from my patients that my passion for solving difficult health questions sets me apart from other acupuncturists. I enjoy working closely with each person who comes to me. I make sure to give each patient my undivided time and attention. I conduct a thorough examination and obtain an extensive medical history to assess both physical and emotional health. This information is distilled and analyzed within the framework of Traditional Chinese Medicine in order to arrive at a precise diagnosis, which determines the specific treatment. Chinese medicine promotes the smooth, healthy flow of energy and stimulates the natural balance of body and mind. The result is relief from pain, improved physical health, and increased vitality and serenity.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
Acupuncture is both art and science. I love using rigorous reasoning to arrive at the correct diagnosis, yet I know that selection of points and herbs is also an art requiring special attention and intuition about what will best help each specific individual. I get incredible rewards from helping people feel better so they can do whatever it is they want to do each day without physical, mental or emotional limitations holding them back. I love seeing the expression on a face that didn’t believe relief was possible and yet here it is! I love sharing the knowledge I have with people so that they are able to maintain the improvements they gained from acupuncture and herbal therapies. I love that I have met so many inspiring people as patients, mentors and teachers as I continue to grow and learn from each and every one.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
People say acupuncture only works if you believe it will work. The mind is a powerful tool, but anyone who has seen a dog or a horse get acupuncture knows that the effect is not a placebo effect. Acupuncture is powerful medicine when applied with skill. The biggest misconception in the media is to limit the conditions for which acupuncture is effective. Everyone agrees that it helps back pain and migraines, but they are missing some of the amazing results for insomnia, anxiety, hot flashes, depression, IBS and other serious digestive complaints such as GERD or reflux, shingles, fibromyalgia and much more. When I first started practicing 15 years ago, needles were still considered “experimental” by the FDA. Now Dr. Oz has talked about acupuncture on Oprah. Acupuncture has become a common household word. This is encouraging because so many people will be helped without surgery or unnecessary medications.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
The most important thing I do for my health is to make time to care for myself. For me this means some quiet time every day. I make sure to give myself the gift of complete relaxation even during very busy times. I believe that incorporating fun as well as relaxation into my daily life helps me stay happy as well as healthy. For me this means that I dance almost daily. I also get acupuncture and take Chinese herbs myself to maintain optimal health. Of course I eat well, which in Chinese medicine may mean a very different diet than many popular health fads. Whole foods and relaxing while eating are of utmost importance. I take care of my body, mind and soul in order to feel my best.

What is blood chemistry analysis?
Blood chemistry analysis is an innovative approach to reading standard lab test results which uses tighter acceptable ranges to reveal imbalances before symptoms arise, and enables a comprehensive, holistic diagnosis, which specifically targets the root causes of health concerns. Optimal health is the standard I use in analyzing lab test results. Looking at tighter ranges allows me to accurately assess the strengths and weaknesses of each individual. By addressing every organ, gland, and system, the whole person is brought into balance. These tangible numeric indicators facilitate tremendous accuracy in the administration of a personalized plan including acupuncture, herbs, supplements, nutritional and lifestyle recommendations while accurately guiding the healing process. The results are often dramatic and extend well beyond the initial reason for the consultation.

Fast facts
Practice type: Private
Specialties: Anxiety, digestive conditions, general wellness, menopause, skin conditions
Styles: Facial rejuvenation acupuncture, herbal therapy, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
At age seven or eight I had recurring visions of acupuncture treatments, although I had no idea what acupuncture was until I was much older. A seed was planted, which began to grow while studying at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. I studied there in the research labs, and I found a serious lack of humanity and compassion in the modern conventional medicine world. So I dug deep and rediscovered my early interests in natural and humane forms of treatment to provide optimal health. By the time my first real teacher of herbal medicine found me, I was completely hooked on the flexibility, safety, power, and finesse in this form of medicine.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I have spent the last half of my life learning to diagnose health problems holistically, and I take case evaluation to a level of detail not commonly seen in the acupuncture world. If you have had a good, but incomplete, experience with your previous acupuncturist and you need more help with your situation, I encourage you to contact me—you may be surprised. My first commitment is to understand health and its experience as an engineer would, since that is my previous training and career experience. My second commitment is to integrate this understanding with the openness of the foundational philosophies of Oriental medicine. My final commitment is to make this total package work for the client. Does your case require a more detailed understanding and a more comprehensive and strategized treatment plan? Contact me!

What do you enjoy most about your work?
Little is more fulfilling than helping people come to an understanding of how to get the most from their health. Anyone interested in Wellness must learn some skills to care for themselves, since Wellness is an individual’s undertaking and cannot be effectively purchased. Helping clients find their own “A-Ha!” moment is hugely fulfilling to me, because the understanding they gain is much bigger than merely learning to manage symptoms… it can change lives through and through.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
Since I live in Dallas, which I regard as culturally less compatible with natural lifestyles than other places in America, I hear so many misconceptions about acupuncture that I don’t even listen anymore. I know what Oriental medicine can do since I see it work every day. I just don’t have that much time, energy, and commitment for naysayers.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
As a practitioner, Oriental medicine is among my top-shelf tools for staying healthy, since it allows you to see what’s coming before it’s here. Oriental medicine’s understanding of disease life cycles offers a powerful view of the past, present, and future of one’s health. I have been able to keep my family healthy by averting problems, and I could not do this without Oriental medicine’s view of disease cycles.

What is the biggest factor in achieving success with acupuncture?
Without a doubt, clear and quality practitioner-client communication is the key. With a deep understanding of a client’s objectives, values, and health resources, I can provide optimal and customized care tuned to the client’s needs. I do my best to truly understand a client’s unique value for their health experience.

Fast facts
Practice type: Private
Specialties: General wellness, infertility, menopause, menstrual conditions, musculoskeletal pain
Styles: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
My lifelong desire to practice medicine took an Eastern turn when I was studying pre-med and met an acupuncturist through a public health program at which I volunteered. I discovered that I was more drawn to prevention of illness and its aftermath than attempting to resolve more substantial damage via more invasive, costly and potentially harmful interventions, such as the surgery I had intended to pursue. It was an enlightening and life-altering decision that I never regretted.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I strive to give my patients a very personal and comfortable environment to create a positive experience of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In addition, I endeavor to reflect positively on the profession through my ongoing study and teaching in the field which enriches my ability to offer from a well informed and experienced position. My two decades of study, practice and teaching, and bringing a Western background to a very foreign understanding of the human condition, contributes to the bridge between Eastern and Western medicine. I have been fortunate to study with some of the most distinguished practitioners in the field and bring this knowledge together for my patients, some of whom I have been treating for many years as their primary health maintenance provider.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
There are some incredibly tangible rewards of practicing this medicine—for example, when a grateful patient has relief from a chronic pain, or carries a healthy baby to term after much difficulty conceiving—but the intangible comes back to me in so many guises. There are seemingly insignificant instances of quality of life evolving positively, such as when patients experience increased joy, as though the weight of everyday life has been lifted. These kinds of positive experiences often result in referrals from my patients, who awaken in others the possibility of trying another approach to health. It is a type of “paying it forward,” but also gives this wonderful medicine a good name.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
That it doesn’t work! Many thousands of patients, most of whom I can say something changed and for the better, cannot be a coincidence! Subtle changes can make a tremendous difference in one’s everyday life.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
My goal is to really try to live the balanced lifestyle that I request of my patients. Even though I like many things, I do them in moderation. I always get eight hours of sleep, don’t skip meals and eat organic as much as possible. I walk, do yoga and trade with a personal trainer every week.

Fast facts
Practice type: Hybrid
Specialties: Depression, digestive conditions, general wellness, menopause, musculoskeletal pain
Styles: Japanese acupuncture, meridian therapy

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
I originally went to college for acupuncture as a means to study herbs. In my early 20s I had a few health issues that weren’t responding to allopathic medicine so I began to treat myself with Western herbs. I thought that formal training in Chinese medicine would allow me to help others as well. In school I was introduced to Japanese styles of acupuncture and classical Chinese theory. I completely resonated with the idea of harmonizing the body/mind/spirit to initiate healing. The focus of my education shifted, and today herbs make up a small portion of my practice.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I spend a lot of time listening to my patients. I focus on what is right with them, helping to nudge the body/mind/spirit back to balance with treatment and encouraging lifestyle changes. I also use direct moxibustion in almost every session.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I enjoy everything about the work! Every day I wake up and am so grateful. I simply love what I do.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
I often find that people are happily surprised to learn that acupuncture is not for the sole purpose of treating pain. I have had many people with some acupuncture experience expect that all treatments are the same, not realizing how many different styles and practices there are.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I live a quiet, simple, abundant life. I study qigong and meditation. I eat well, meaning: clean meat, organic fresh fruits and vegetables, good water, and real tea! I am fortunate to be able to grow all the food I eat in the summer and fall. I am able to store homegrown food for the winter, often stretching it into the spring. Gardening is how I get a lot of my physical exercise. I also hike when the snowpack is melted, ski/snowshoe in the winter, and walk endlessly around the trails, with my partner and dogs, at our home year round.

Fast facts
Specialties: General wellness, infertility, menopause, menstrual conditions, sexual conditions
Styles: Japanese acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), trigger point acupuncure

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
Acupuncture has, for most of my life, been my go-to source for wellness, be it preventative care or management of acute symptoms or pain. Through my experience as a patient, I became awed by the body’s incredible potential for health as I witnessed many of my own chronic issues disappear with just a little coaxing from needles, moxa, and bodywork. I became an acupuncturist to share that awe with my community, and offer an alternative to the one-size-fits-all, toxic side-effects ridden forms of healthcare which are unfortunately most accessible. Acupuncture can be, and should be, available to everyone!

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I strive to be flexible and open in my approach to treatment. While there is certainly something to be said for firmly adhering to specific protocols from one tradition, I feel like there are too many brilliant variations on the theme of natural healing to not be constantly expanding and incorporating new ideas. If there is one thing I’ve learned from working with people it’s that each person is unique, with a unique background, identity, and health history. I intend to honor that individuality and meet you where you are in each moment, drawing from my full range of education and experience to craft the best, tailor-made treatment possible for you.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
One of the most common things I hear from new patients is that acupuncture is their “last straw.” They’re aching for a baby, or they’ve been suffering from excruciating cramps or digestive issues, or coping with a nagging pain from an old injury and just can’t take it anymore. They’ve tried a multitude of other professionals for their condition and have gotten either periodic relief or no relief at all, so they’ve decided to throw all caution to the wind and try that crazy ancient getting-poked-with-needles thing—and it works! One of my dearest colleagues calls this the “wow factor.” I’m not sure if it’s more a thrill for me or my patients, but to know that I am able to facilitate that sort of tremendous healing change and help to return confidence in people’s bodies is an incredible thing.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
The most frustrating misconception I hear about acupuncture is that it is just for rich people/”new age” people/women/men/insert other limiting stereotype here. The question of healthcare affordability is extremely salient, and it is disappointing that there are not more practitioners who are willing to take part in the discussion. I impart to my patients the vital importance of taking care of themselves, even though it often requires financial expenditures to do so. However, I make every effort to work with each person to maximize their treatment options in a way that is both effective and comfortable for their wallet. As for the other stereotypes, the only way to know if acupuncture is, or is not, for you is to try it out!

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I’ve done a lot of extra training in whole food nutrition, so healthy food—from seed to table—is a big deal for me. I also train in Muay Thai for exercise and a powerful release of energy, spend as much time as possible outside, and surround myself with laughter and a loving community.

In addition to being an acupuncturist, you are also a doula. Do you recommend acupuncture to women during pregnancy?
Acupuncture is not only safe, but can be extraordinarily effective during pregnancy, from ensuring conception through managing nausea and aches and pains, all the way to delivery and postpartum recovery. During labor, acupuncture is tremendously helpful for getting things started and moving along smoothly, as well as being an adjunct to doula support for pain management and emotional relaxation once labor is fully underway. I am thrilled to be able to combine my experience as a birth doula, massage therapist, and acupuncturist in working with moms and their partners to facilitate a natural, easy pregnancy from pre-conception to birth and beyond!

Fast facts
Practice type: Private
Specialties: Allergies, anxiety, back pain, menopause, sports injuries
Styles: Five Element acupuncture, Japanese acupuncture, trigger point acupuncture

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
After many years of misdiagnosis, and after many visits to conventional medicine, acupuncture literally changed my health and thus my life. With its theological and ideological basis, coupled with an absolute connection with the earth, I knew from the first moment that my new direction in life was to act as an ambassador for, and become a life long student of this exceptional and extraordinary medicine.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I feel privileged indeed to have studied acupuncture under some of the most influential and distinguished practitioners in the world. I believe that what differentiates me from others in this wonderful profession is my skill set, which not only concentrated on the constructs of acupuncture, but also builds in modern day thought and approaches to complement the ancient ideas of acupuncture. I also believe that my background in teaching gives me a viable platform to explain my approach and thus enable the patient to feel part of the process.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
The most enjoyable aspect of working in this wonderful art form, is, without doubt, the interaction with my patients. Seeing progression and change is an extraordinary honor, and getting to understand the people I work with is a enormous privilege. Building trust is absolutely paramount to successful clinical outcomes in my mind and thus providing a safe and comfortable space for people to divulge, unload and unwind is a true pleasure in this day and age. A throw back to simpler times perhaps.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
I am not sure I have heard too many misconceptions about acupuncture, although someone once asked me if it were akin to voodoo. What I think often takes people aback, is the wealth of knowledge, the depth of study and brilliance of the construct of acupuncture’s medical system. The ability of it to treat from head to toe, whilst encompassing the whole body and its surroundings. For example, how feasible would it be to treat stress, without taking into consideration the emotional components of a person’s life?

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I am a true exponent of acupuncture and make sure that I am treated often. Also diet and exercise, meditation and healthy debate, provide a wonderful framework to “exercise” all the aspects of my life. Movement is the KEY—movement of the mind, movement of the soul and a positive outlook help me to maintain optimum health.
