Fast facts
Practice type: Private
Specialties: Cancer support, general wellness, infertility, musculoskeletal pain, women’s health
Styles: Dr. Tan’s Balance Method, herbal therapy, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
During my first acupuncture treatment, I remember experiencing such a profound state of relaxation and sense of comfort within my body that I was awe struck. Before this, I hadn’t realized how good I could feel. Acupuncture transformed my life by helping me feel better than I had ever felt before. During the course of my treatments, I also experienced the effectiveness of Chinese herbal medicine in treating conditions for which Western medicine had no treatment or cure. For many years, I had been practicing qigong and yoga, as well as studying Western herbalism, holistic philosophies, and how our environment affects human health. The decision to become an acupuncturist and herbalist seemed like a natural progression. I wanted to be able to relieve pain for others and help them reach their highest potential, just as acupuncture and herbal medicine had done—and still does—for me and my family.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I listen to patients. I believe that what patients’ bodies are telling them, and what they tell me, is valuable information. At a time when Western medicine fails to see the whole person, I find myself being both a holistic practitioner and a medical advocate—helping patients understand when they must pursue a Western medical diagnosis, a second opinion, surgery, or pharmaceutical, and when they are best treated with acupuncture or herbal medicine. I practice Balance Method style acupuncture, which can treat most issues without needling directly into the problem area. This style of acupuncture often provides amazingly instantaneous results. Additionally, I am an herbalist as much as an acupuncturist. Many practitioners do not practice herbal medicine and this is a disadvantage to patients with chronic health problems. By using herbs in addition to acupuncture, I can achieve the best results for all my patients.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
Hands down, the best part of my job is helping relieve pain and suffering for people. I feel that it is truly a gift to be able to ease someone’s suffering. As a general practitioner, I have had the unique opportunity to treat patients of all ages, from infants to elders, and I enjoy the diversity this brings to my practice. I enjoy helping patients with the health challenges that present at each stage of one’s life. This allows me to stay connected to the progression and cycles of human life. Each patient’s health problems are a unique puzzle. I am never bored. I spend my days solving these puzzles and that makes each day different—it always teaches me something. I love this. I feel very grateful to be able to learn and practice this ancient and profound medicine.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
I find that one of the more unfortunate misconceptions that people have about acupuncture is that it is only covering up the pain or problem—not actually fixing it. I have had many patients who were getting excellent results with acupuncture and then stopped treatment because they felt that they were just masking the problem. On the contrary, acupuncture can correct the problem by helping the body heal itself. This is a powerful concept. One needs to understand that the body has an innate ability to heal itself. Trauma, stress, poor diet, and overwork inhibit this process, so we sometimes need a little help to move us in the right direction. Acupuncture has been shown to improve circulation, speed healing, relieve pain, balance hormones, reduce stress, and improve the immune system. Very few problems cannot be helped or resolved with that sort of track record!

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
My husband, my daughter, and I stay healthy by cooking all our own meals using fresh, unprocessed, organic, or non-GMO ingredients. We follow the dietary principles of Chinese medicine, eating a diversity of fresh and unprocessed foods, and supplementing or eliminating certain foods in order to help balance each of our individual constitutions. I stretch and exercise gently, enjoy moderate sunshine and fresh air, and use acupuncture for stress reduction. When my family or I do get sick, we use acupuncture and herbs to get better quickly and avoid complications.

Fast facts
Practice type: Private
Specialties: Allergies, cosmetic care, infertility, pediatric conditions, women’s health
Styles: Facial rejuvenation acupuncture, pediatric acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
I was attracted to acupuncture after I was involved in two car accidents and was unable to get rid of my neck and upper back pain with other therapies. Chinese medicine was also able to help me get off of the prednisone and antibiotic cycle that I was on for year-round rhinitis. After my great experience with acupuncture and herbs, I wanted to share these therapies with others.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I am a mother and have raised my child from the very beginning using Traditional Chinese Medicine. I have a huge interest in pediatrics and helping resolve childhood issues. I also want to help parents resolve their own health issues, and teach them how to live a healthy lifestyle so that they can be good examples to their children and families.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I most enjoy the great joy of hearing how much better patients feel, even after their first treatment. Most report that they are more relaxed, sleeping better, and feel more levelheaded.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
The biggest misconception I encounter is that acupuncture is a “magic bullet.” Sometimes individuals think that their chronic issues can be completely resolved in just one or two treatments. One treatment may not be enough—if you’ve been dealing with an issue for a long time, it will take time for the body to heal.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I stay healthy in my own life first and foremost by eating healthy, organic fruits and vegetables, and grass or organically fed meats. I eat seasonally and locally as much as possible. As well, I take every opportunity to laugh and live in the moment. This keeps me mentally healthy. I also walk and hike in the great outdoors as often as possible and practice yoga regularly.

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
I became an acupuncturist, herbalist, and author of health and wellness books because I have a passion and desire to help people reach their own individual optimal health and fertility.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
As well as practicing for almost a decade, I am a published author of health, wellness, and fertility focused books. I am an avid professional who is considered one of the nation’s leading alternative health, wellness, and fertility experts.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
Helping my patients find peace, joy, and optimum health in a way that works for them.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
Acupuncture to me is much more than just needles—it is a way of life, as acupuncture is just one facet of Traditional Oriental Medicine. I work with my patients on a much deeper emotional, spiritual, and nutritional level. Acupuncture is just one of my many tools.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I practice what I preach. I eat clean. I meditate. I find joy in my every day. I get acupuncture. I am constantly tuned in to the environment around me. I am always eager to learn more.

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
I had a premed degree and wanted to choose a profession from which I would not burn out, as each patient is totally different from any other. After using natural healthcare for my family for 20 years, this seemed like a perfect choice.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I treat every patient as an individual, and take them from where they are to where they want to be. I continue learning in order to help increase my knowledge. I treat emotional issues, fertility, and more. I have a certificate in Oriental reproductive medicine, which requires increased knowledge in that area.

I using vibration and cold laser when needed, after many hours of study using them. I also use herbs and homeopathy as needed to increase resolution of problems more quickly. I help with symptoms in a natural way. I can help with almost any problem, and will refer out if needed. All ages benefit, as do problems from head to toe.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I enjoy helping patients become pain free, have peace of mind, and resolve problems of all kinds. This is a fulfilling way to spend my time.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
I do not hear misconceptions much.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I practice qigong as a certified instructor, eat well, exercise with my dog, and do Pilates. We all need exercise, to eat well, and to drink plenty of water. I could not function at work without doing so.

Fast facts
Practice type: Hybrid
Specialties: Digestive conditions, general wellness, infertility, menstrual conditions
Styles: Five Element acupuncture, trigger point acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
Just like the gentleman on the razor commercials, I was a satisfied customer. I first received acupuncture more than 20 years ago and loved the benefits I could see and feel in body, mind, and spirit. I had been preparing to begin my studies to become a certified nurse midwife, but soon realized that a career in acupuncture would allow me to serve a greater variety of clients in a greater range of circumstances. I loved discovering that I could help the body self-heal rather than becoming another provider of procedures and pills.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I understand and like science, and I am able to explain the sometimes mystical-sounding world of acupuncture in clear non-mystical language. I continue to receive acupuncture treatment regularly and know what it is like to be on the patient side of the equation. I’ve thought a lot and written a lot about the policy side of the field.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love working with people of all ages and circumstances. I enjoy getting to know what makes people tick. I enjoy seeing people thrive and regain good health, often after years of illness or just not feeling well.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
That it is primarily used for pain.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I take a long walk with Buford, the dog, every day and I make an effort to get a reasonable amount of sleep. I eat three mostly healthy meals per day. I take yoga three times a week. And I try to laugh and spend time with family and friends regularly, and I get outside as much as I can.

Fast facts
Practice type: Private
Specialties: Allergies, anxiety, digestive conditions, infertility, musculoskeletal pain
Styles: Japanese acupuncture (Kiiko Matsumoto)

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
I never went to the doctor growing up. I learned from an early age that with excellent health, we can thrive. I have devoted my life to helping people achieve a life with less pain, stress, or illness and to teaching them a lifestyle of balance. When I discovered acupuncture in college, it felt like instant magnetism. I was drawn to its unique and deep healing abilities.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
Instant and lasting results. Trained in Kiiko Matsumoto’s style of acupuncture, I utilize a feedback system of diagnosis that ensures that I precisely pinpoint the root cause of your discomfort, and that you leave my office feeling dramatically better. I consider myself a health detective—unraveling the story of who you are, offering you physical relief, and providing you tools for transforming how you feel in your life. You provide me your health map, and, like a pilot, I locate the precise coordinates to unlocking your physical and emotional recovery.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
Interacting with my patients and watching miracles happen. People change right in front of my eyes. As they continue their treatments, I watch them feel happier and live healthier. A woman recently came into my office for back pain. She had been in a car accident and after going to her chiropractor for a month he suggested she try acupuncture to help alleviate her pain. Her body movements, personality, and physical findings showed me issues that existed before the accident, and together with her words, I was able to quickly locate her personal prescription for healing. She is now pain free and back to her everyday life. Miracles like this are the fuel that keeps me excited about this medicine.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
1) Acupuncture doesn’t work. 2) Acupuncture uses big needles and hurts. Acupuncture has been around for 5,000 years. It is a highly regarded medical practice that has been referred to by Western medical doctors, chiropractors, psychologists, and other healthcare professionals for over 30 years in America. Many newcomers walk into my office thinking that the size of an acupuncture needle is the same as that of a hypodermic needle, which is the needle used for vaccinations. Acupuncture needles are hair-thin and often cannot be felt when inserted. A fun fact: It takes 15 acupuncture needles to fit in the hole of a hypodermic needle.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
Being an athlete, yogini, and swimmer, I have always been very involved with my physical and nutritional health. I exercise daily for at least an hour, I eat well, I work hard, I make sure to spend time with my friends and family, and I try to receive bodywork once a week. I am energized by my life’s work. It is such a privilege and joy to practice acupuncture every day. I truly feel blessed to have such wonderful patients who fill my day with connection, laughter, and discoveries. Thank you!

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
To help people! I love working with all kinds of individuals. What makes my job rewarding is the success they feel as they make improvements to their health through my treatments.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I am patient. I utilize many tools employed by Oriental medicine to provide the most effective treatment while still providing comfort, respect and emotional support tailored to each individual client. I am mentally flexible and find ways to work through physical and emotional blockages that cause disease.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
The best thing about my work is that success translates into real changes in quality of life for my clients. I happen to thoroughly enjoy performing cupping, gua sha and trigger point therapy. These are among the tools of Oriental medicine that illicit almost immediate changes. That’s always nice to see when working with a gentle and gradual art such as acupuncture.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
1) Acupuncture is just for back pain. This medicine can never be pigeonholed. It can do amazing things for all sorts of folks. 2) It can “mess with” medications. Acupuncture is not contraindicated for those on Western medications. Giving medical history is important, but acupuncture will not interfere with your meds. It can actually improve your response to them and hinder side effects.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I routinely practice qigong to clear my energy, and I practice Pilates to strengthen my spine and core. Diet is my number-one source of balance. If and when I get sick, I see my acupuncturist and take Chinese herbal formulas.

How many treatments are typically required for patients to meet their goals?
For problems that are under a week old, two or three treatments may be all that is needed. For issues that are chronic—months or years old—I say that eight to 12 treatments may be needed to even see progress. Sometimes receiving treatments two or three times a week is necessary for severe issues.

Keep your mind open. If you have not had acupuncture before, get ready for an experience that can reform you from the inside out. Some of my clients come every week for life. They have learned that this is what they need in order to live optimally.

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
To help everyone find balance and create health. To educate that we can heal ourselves. To improve community and personal health in a tangible, clear way.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I easily translate Chinese medical theory into everyday metaphors. I make this medicine accessible and understandable. I help you understand what is happening with your body in a quiet and gentle way that allows for deep healing, compassion and understanding.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love helping people feel better. I love seeing the “aha” as my patients understand and believe that they can have a better quality of life. I enjoy educating my patients on diet, exercise and mental skills that allow for lower stress and greater health.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
“Acupuncture is only for pain. Acupuncture doesn’t work long term. Acupuncture helps that?” These are the common misconceptions I hear about acupuncture. Acupuncture is for wellness; it’s for stress relief, insomnia, allergies, etc. Basically, if you’re out of balance, acupuncture can help. Please, just ask!

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I live my medicine. I take Chinese herbs when I get sick, I use acupuncture to manage my health. I use pediatric acupuncture and herbs with my children. For me, this medicine is the first and usually the only medicine I use. I eat well, exercise, sleep well and take care of my mental wellbeing.

Practice type: Private
Specialties: Digestive conditions, infertility, musculoskeletal pain, stroke, women’s health
Styles: Dr. Tan’s Balance Method, Five Element acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
After eight years of practice as a massage therapist, I moved to Seattle to study acupuncture and herbal medicine. I wanted to better help my patients and myself. I have overcome physical injuries of my own. Acupuncture and herbal medicine fascinate me. I love helping people achieve their greatest potential.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I have eight years of massage therapy experience. I am certified in reflexology. I have studied Five Element acupuncture with Lonny Jarrett. I have graduated from Bastyr University with a masters in acupuncture and Oriental medicine and bachelor’s in science. I understand first-hand chronic pain due to injuries sustained in a car accident. I am committed to my own health in order to help my patients find their path to health and wellness.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I am passionate about herbal medicine. Understanding how the herbs work together in a formula is beautiful medicine. I enjoy everything about my work! I love meeting people and helping them achieve their greatest potential.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
Acupuncture is safe—and no, it doesn’t hurt. You will feel the qi, but it is nothing like getting a shot or a tattoo, waxing, laser hair removal, or dental work. Most of my patients fall asleep during treatment. And this isn’t a magic bullet. It is natural medicine. It promotes our bodies’ awesome ability to heal.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I train in Pilates two times a week. I also go to the gym two-to-three hours a week for cardio training. I have regular craniosacral treatments, massage, acupuncture, and chiropractic care. I take my herbs and multi vitamins. I meditate and read daily. I spend time with friends and family weekly. I enjoy time with my dog, gardening, cooking, and blowing glass.

Fast facts
Practice type: Hybrid
Specialties: Anxiety, autoimmune conditions, depression, general wellness, infertility
Styles: community acupuncture, Dr. Tan’s Balance Method, Five Element acupuncture

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
When I was 29, I suffered from IBS, depression and chronic fatigue. Acupuncture was the only thing that helped and the more I learned, the more I loved it. I decided to leave a high-paying sales position to pursue my dream of helping the world one person at a time.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I am different from other acupuncturists because I am part of a Sufi community that focuses on cultivating the ideal of Divine Embodiment. Many of the community members are healers in one form or another, and our lifestyle, outlook and daily practices cultivate a deep ability to bring healing from a Divine place. I’ve also studied spiritual healing at the University of Spiritual Healing and Sufism.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I really enjoy developing relationships with individuals and seeing them make transformations in their lives.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
The biggest misconception that I hear about acupuncture is that it is only for pain. Acupuncture is thousands of years old and can treat the whole range of physical ailments in the human body.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
In order to stay healthy in my own life, I am focused on eating a healthy diet. I believe that the root of all sickness comes from the food we eat. Additionally, I focus on incorporating movement into my daily routine in the form of qigong and yoga (I am a certified yoga instructor) and maintaining my spiritual health (through a variety of Sufi spiritual practices).
