Fast facts
Practice type: Private
Specialties: Digestive conditions, emotional health, general wellness, insomnia, musculoskeletal pain
Styles: Dr. Tan’s Balance Method, Five Element acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
As a patient of acupuncture and Chinese medicine, I experienced significant transformations both physically and emotionally. After suffering for years with conditions I had come to believe were unchangeable, I was amazed by the degree to which acupuncture and herbs were able to improve my health and enhance my life. My experience left me completely enamored and in awe of Chinese medicine. I knew I needed to learn everything I could about this amazing medicine and share its capacity for dramatic but gentle healing with every person I possibly could. That realization led me on my journey to becoming an acupuncturist and practitioner of Chinese medicine.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
My approach to treatment is organic and adaptable, emerging out of my interaction with a particular patient and the health concerns or conditions being addressed. I believe that each patient is unique, with needs and circumstances that are specific to his or her individual situation. We are diverse, dynamic creatures in a constant state of evolution and flux. I believe a model of healthcare that is equally dynamic and free from orthodoxy is essential for stimulating the body’s own innate capacity for healing and bringing about long-lasting transformation. To this end, I draw upon multiple traditions within the field of Chinese medicine, tailoring each treatment to the individual patient and merging styles when necessary, rather than strictly adhering to one particular tradition or approach to treatment.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love watching patients realize they don’t have to feel sick or tired or live in constant pain. I love when patients realize that they can feel better, that their health can improve, and that feeling good is possible. A lot of people live with health concerns or conditions to which they have simply become accustomed, perhaps believing their particular problem or issue is permanent and unchangeable. Even a single acupuncture treatment can help these patients understand the possibilities for improved health and well being. I love helping my patients understand that being healthy and feeling good is their right, that they don’t have to resign themselves to a life of permanent and constant discomfort or pain, and that their bodies want to be healthy and are inherently capable of healing.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
That it doesn’t work because we don’t understand how it works. I have seen amazing transformations and healing occur through the application of acupuncture and Chinese medicine, and I have experienced the transformative power of this medicine myself. We might not be able to identify or describe the exact mechanism responsible for acupuncture’s effects, but that does not negate its capacity to heal.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I try to maintain balance in my life on a daily basis. I strive to eat well, sleep well, exercise often, and have as much fun as possible. Being in nature energizes and inspires me, and I strive to make contact with the natural world every day. I read as often as I can whatever I can get my hands on, laugh frequently, rest when necessary, and surround myself with an amazing, supportive community of family and friends. And I strive to invoke gratitude daily.

Fast facts
Practice type: Community
Specialties: Addiction, emotional health, general wellness, musculoskeletal pain, stress
Styles: Dr. Tan’s Balance Method, auricular (ear) acupuncture, scalp acupuncture, herbal therapy

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
I was only able to afford acupuncture because I found Alberta Street Acupuncture in Portland, OR, which offered sliding scale services. They helped me with a number of chronic health conditions in a way that pharmaceutical drugs couldn’t. I also worked as a counselor at a detox program where NADA ear acupuncture was used on a daily basis for recovering alcoholics and heroin addicts—many with severe psychiatric conditions, some who lived on the streets. I saw how it helped them calm down, get through detox and stay engaged with recovery. These experiences radically transformed how I understood community health. I wanted to learn how to make acupuncture more accessible to everyday people, and how to facilitate the growth of community-based clinics.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
For me acupuncture is a community-building tool. Understood as such, this puts less emphasis on myself or my charisma. I’m not a guru, not going to pose as the be all and end all of your medical care. My outreach and my ability to facilitate changes in people is highly limited if I’m the only one providing acupuncture within a given community. Anything that is dependent solely on me will not be sustainable. My role therefore is not only to provide treatments, but also to get local health workers trained, and to help others establish clinics that are community-based.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
In a community clinic, it’s exciting to see diverse people of different backgrounds share a space. Several of my colleagues have started up clinics within Catholic churches, open to the public regardless of creed, for people who’ve never had access to acupuncture nor would have ever sought out or been able to afford an acupuncturist. I recently visited one of these churches, where a group of Mormons in the neighborhood started coming, and subsequently invited them to come offer a clinic in the nearby Mormon temple. Stories like this remind me that acupuncture isn’t just for well off liberals and new age folks. Acupuncture is, as has been traditionally in China, for the poor and the rich, the worker and the unemployed, the conservative and the liberal, the atheist as well as the born-again Christian. Acupuncture is for everyone. I love seeing this happen.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
That acupuncture is only for people who have disposable income or who are liberal. There’s a growing number of community acupuncture and public health clinics that offer affordable services. Some addictions and mental health programs offer ear acupuncture as an adjunct to standard treatment, many of which operate in very conservative and rural areas of the U.S. These types of clinics will continue to make acupuncture accessible to people who would probably never seek out an acupuncturist. If you can’t afford any of the acupuncturists in your town, ask them to offer affordable sliding scale or community acupuncture treatments. They need to hear from you.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
Being involved in my community while always finding time and space for solitude and nature. Have to pray. Every day.

Fast facts
Practice type: Private
Specialties: Digestive conditions, menstrual conditions, musculoskeletal pain, skin conditions, emotional health
Styles: Five Element acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
I’ve had several personal experiences that suggest our current medical system does not have all the answers to help one progress in their health. My early exposure to acupuncture demonstrated an energetic system of medicine that seemed comprehensive and complementary to our existing system of medicine, providing some of the missing pieces. It is my goal to share this deepened energetic understanding of our wellbeing with patients through acupuncture, education and integrating with their current experience in our Western medicine system, to help each client progress and feel in charge of their own path to healing.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
For the past 12-plus years I have studied rigorously with a world-renowned physician, Dr. Tran Viet Dzung, who has taught me the inherent reasoning of energetic medicine (acupuncture) from the ancient medical texts written thousands of years ago, integrating it with today’s Western medicine. From my studies, I am very results-oriented in my approach and my goal is to help patients reach their true health potential as quickly as possible. My training, experience and service offerings are focused primarily on acupuncture and I do my best to help educate patients on the importance of healthy nutrition and other lifestyle choices to aid them in attaining their best health potential.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
Helping patients get back on track with their health so they can enjoy life and live life to their fullest unique potential. I enjoy seeing the joy on people’s faces when they attain results in their care that they didn’t even know were possible. I enjoy studying, studying and studying more to learn all that acupuncture can offer in treating the most challenging complex conditions and applying what I learn with my patients to get better results.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
The biggest misconception I hear is that it hurts. Although you may feel the very fine needles on insertion, it is only for a moment, and is nothing like feeling the needles when you go to the doctor for a shot or to have your blood drawn. To me, acupuncture is not about the “needles” at all. It is about accurately assessing one’s energy and knowing how to regulate and affect one’s energy for their optimum health. The needles are simply an effective tool to facilitate this.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I do my best to practice what I preach by eating well, getting a good night’s rest, practicing Yi Ren qigong, doing work that I love, spending time with loved ones, enjoying nature, practicing yoga, taking time off, and when needed, treating myself with acupuncture!

What is an experience at Energetic Medicine like?
We do our best to provide excellence in customer service, quality of care, client comfort and relaxation, and client results and satisfaction. We hope that at Energetic Medicine you would expect to be well heard in your goals for getting well and to have our utmost focus in doing all that we can to assist you in achieving your healthcare goals.

Fast facts
Practice type: Private
Specialties: Addiction, allergies, general wellness, stress, emotional health
Styles: Japanese acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), trigger point acupuncture, intuitive healing

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
After 10 years of studying and engaging numerous therapeutic methods and healthful lifestyle practices, I experienced profound and lasting improvements after just one acupuncture session. I understood then that East Asian healing traditions offered a truly holistic approach to medicine and wellbeing. Through deep exploration of my own dis-ease and evolution, I’ve come to understand that holistic wellness evolves from holistic practices, particularly those that are accessible, easeful and effective—and Chinese medicine has proven effective for thousands of years. Acupuncture helps people heal, balance and restore at the deepest levels of body / mind / spirit. It is a gift to be a practitioner in this transformational field.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
With a background in counseling psychology, yoga, meditation, flower + gem essences and intuitive healing, I balance hands-on and energetic approaches with compassionate, interpersonal support. Maintaining health is just as, if not more important, than recovery from symptoms and relief from discomfort. In collaboration with a person’s needs and interests, I sense / see / listen deeply to help assess issues of concern and offer support by way of dietary and movement therapy, lifestyle choices, custom essence blends and breathing / meditation / insight practices. By simultaneously releasing physical patterns and uplifting habits of thought and behavior, we are empowered to realize optimal health and wellbeing at the highest level.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
Witnessing the courage of people to get well and grow and the deep learning that is inspired by this kind of connection.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
Two misconceptions stand out: 1) It’s necessarily painful. Not so. Much has to do with the method and the acupuncturist—sometimes the thinnest needles, most gently manipulated can offer profound results, 2) It’s all about needles. Much of the “healing” that takes place between client and practitioner involves trust and intention, as well as complementary therapeutics such as massage, energy work, and conversation.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
Breath-centered yoga, insight/vipassana meditation, walking, hiking and biking are my primary forms of conscious physical exercise. Cultivating quiet and spending time with good friends. Eating whole foods, cooking, and reading the works of evolved people. Music, writing, drawing, art, beading with gemstones, movies. I seek the support and guidance of intuitive healers. Breathing is my sweetest companion and I consciously watch the ever-changing landscape of thoughts, sensations, beliefs and emotions—to encourage honesty, spaciousness, and freedom.

What advice do you offer people who are searching for a good acupuncturist match?
Perhaps start by reading about a practitioner through their bio and/or testimonials online. Word of mouth is great. Ask friends, family and colleagues for referrals. If you feel comfortable, indicate the kind of support and experience you are looking for—that helps focus the search. Prepare questions to ask the practitioner before calling to gather information or before setting an appointment. Trust your instincts—do you like what you read, see, hear, sense? When you meet, notice the tone and content of the practitioners responses: do you feel heard and understood, do you feel comfortable in the environment, are there things that put you off? Communicating any discomfort, questions or hesitation to the acupuncturist is often very helpful for the practitioner and helps empower you as a person involved in your own healing. Notice how you feel during and after each treatment session—keep notes if that’s helpful for you. Effective healing can be a light, interesting, easeful, informative, interesting, encouraging, supportive and transformational experience—consider what kind of experience you’d like and allow for the possibilities.
