Why did you become an acupuncturist?
My choice to become an acupuncturist has been a pursuit of passion. As have many others, I have repeatedly observed and experienced how Traditional Chinese Medicine, which has existed for thousands of years, is a compassionate and effective healing method.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
By combining my knowledge and experience as both a Western and Eastern healthcare practitioner, I serve my clients well. I have found that many routine health problems and chronic conditions for which drugs and surgery are only partially effective or not effective at all benefit from Traditional Chinese Medicine.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I am in awe of this incredible medicine every moment of my practice and life. Every day I see what can be construed as minor or even major miracles, whether it is alleviation of stress, anxiety, depression, acute or chronic pain, or the breaking up of vicious cycles of illness and emotional turmoil. Having been an RN in critical and emergency care for decades, and now as a practitioner of Oriental medicine for more than 10 years, I have developed a deep confidence in the effectiveness of this medicine. Its success lies in its emphasis on identifying and treating the root cause as well as the symptoms of a problem.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
The biggest misconception regarding Oriental medicine is that it is mostly a treatment for pain. Often, it is regarded as a last-resort treatment. Oriental medicine needs to become well known as a truly preventive and first-resort medicine that covers a wide range of health issues.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I am constantly working to maintain and improve my health and wellbeing. I get acupuncture, chiropractic, massage, and craniosacral treatments regularly. I take herbs when needed. I see an MD who practices functional medicine. I take regular supplements and eat only organic and whole foods that I cook at home. I bike and walk regularly. I start my mornings slowly, making a wonderful breakfast, having quiet, meditative time to myself. Most days I practice a rather simple and short qigong routine.

Fast facts
Practice type: Hybrid
Specialties: Allergies, back pain, general wellness, headaches / migraines, sexual conditions

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
Chinese medicine has always been of interest to me since my early twenties, when I was suffering terrible migraine headaches. As I got older, I had more and more health issues that negatively affected my everyday living experience. Time and again, Western medicine failed me. My acupuncturist helped me heal in ways that Western medicine told me were impossible. After my son was born, which was thought to be impossible, I was convinced that I wanted to be part of this healing for other people.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
My acupuncture experience has offered me a wide range of methods and treatments. I have had the good fortune to study Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese herbs, Five Element acupuncture, Kiiko Matsumoto-style Japanese acupuncture, and tuina massage. I also spent many hours in the service of a local veteran’s hospital that has helped me understand different levels of pain, both emotionally and physically. I am always looking for new things to learn and am always amazed at the way this medicine helps individuals heal on so many levels.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
To me, Chinese medicine offers everyone the gentlest, most effective treatment for many ailments that commonly affect people. Many of these ailments, left untreated by Western medicine, turn into major medical problems in the patient’s future. Knowing that I’m helping people potentially avoid these major problems—without side effects, medications, or major expense—gives me the highest reward.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
The biggest misconception of some is that acupuncture needs to be proven effective. It’s my experience, after seeing people suffering from the side effects of Western medicinal treatments, that it’s Western medicine that should prove itself. Chinese medicine has been treating people for centuries and has had thousands of masters adding to the medicine along the way. Western medicine has been studied for only several hundred years, and offers chemical compounds that treat symptoms of disease while causing many other issues that then get treated with other chemicals. The choice seems clear to me. Chinese medicine can take an already healthy person and make him or her healthier. Whereas, Western medicine takes healthy people, gives them chemical compounds, and makes them unhealthier.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
How do I stay healthy? The same way I tell my patients—I see my acupuncturist regularly, and exercise and eat well.

Fast facts
Practice type: Private
Specialties: Allergies, cosmetic care, infertility, pediatric conditions, women’s health
Styles: Facial rejuvenation acupuncture, pediatric acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
I was attracted to acupuncture after I was involved in two car accidents and was unable to get rid of my neck and upper back pain with other therapies. Chinese medicine was also able to help me get off of the prednisone and antibiotic cycle that I was on for year-round rhinitis. After my great experience with acupuncture and herbs, I wanted to share these therapies with others.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I am a mother and have raised my child from the very beginning using Traditional Chinese Medicine. I have a huge interest in pediatrics and helping resolve childhood issues. I also want to help parents resolve their own health issues, and teach them how to live a healthy lifestyle so that they can be good examples to their children and families.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I most enjoy the great joy of hearing how much better patients feel, even after their first treatment. Most report that they are more relaxed, sleeping better, and feel more levelheaded.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
The biggest misconception I encounter is that acupuncture is a “magic bullet.” Sometimes individuals think that their chronic issues can be completely resolved in just one or two treatments. One treatment may not be enough—if you’ve been dealing with an issue for a long time, it will take time for the body to heal.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I stay healthy in my own life first and foremost by eating healthy, organic fruits and vegetables, and grass or organically fed meats. I eat seasonally and locally as much as possible. As well, I take every opportunity to laugh and live in the moment. This keeps me mentally healthy. I also walk and hike in the great outdoors as often as possible and practice yoga regularly.

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
While growing up in a family of Western medical doctors, I always believed there had to be another way to treat maladies besides using antibiotics and pharmaceuticals. With acupuncture, I found that way. Using your own body, acupuncture helps to bring you back into balance by treating not only the symptoms of your pathology but also the root of your imbalance. I received my bachelor’s degree at University of California Santa Barbara and moved to Los Angeles in 2001. Having lived here for over a decade, I know the stressful demands that this city can put on your body and mind. Acupuncture has helped me to maintain a healthy, pain-free, and relatively stress-free lifestyle. My goal is to help you do the same!

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
Attending the master’s program at Emperor’s College allowed me to see hundreds of patients in the college clinic, while affording the opportunity to work with patients outside the clinic at The Disney Cancer Center in Burbank, and at UCLA’s Arthur Ashe Medical Center. I have recently received training in the Mei Zen Facial Rejuvenation techniques of cosmetic acupuncture, which not only helps to reduce visible signs of aging but also strengthens the body’s immune system, thereby promoting longevity. I am also a certified yoga instructor, having trained at Yogaworks Center For Yoga. I incorporate this training into my practice, using yoga as an adjunct to acupuncture as a healing modality.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love to help people. Helping people transform their lives through regular acupuncture and guided lifestyle changes is the most rewarding experience.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
The biggest misconception about acupuncture is that it is painful. I myself suffered from a fear of needles growing up, but when you experience acupuncture, you realize how comfortable the experience can be. The needles are hair-thin, and the sensations that you experience are often quite pleasurable and relaxing.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I see an acupuncturist every week to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I also exercise three-to-four times a week, and I eat balanced meals with lean meats and vegetables and fruits daily. I practice yoga three-to-four times a week and meditate daily.

Fast facts
Practice type: Private
Specialties: Addiction, allergies, general wellness, sexual conditions, women’s health
Styles: Auricular (ear) acupuncture, NADA, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
I chose to study acupuncture during my third year of naturopathic medicine training, when I realized that acupuncture addresses physical and emotional discomfort in efficient, effective and sustainable ways that are often unmatched in Western medicine. In particular, I was drawn to how Traditional Chinese Medicine views the body and mind holistically, gracefully integrating the treatment of mind, body, and spirit into every acupuncture session. Acupuncture is also appealing because it is accessible to and effective for people with conditions that are not well served by Western medicine, such as sexual issues or addictive and compulsive behaviors. My interest in these areas predates my acupuncture training by over a decade. I’ve worked with harm-reduction organizations, focusing on safer sexual practices and needle exchange programs. So finding an effective, empowering, and sustainable avenue of care made the decision to become an acupuncturist an easy one.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I work in an integrative medicine setting. My clinic and practice are multidisciplinary: MDs, NDs, and acupuncturists working side by side and often collaborating to treat patients. So I live with one foot in the Western medicine world and one in the Traditional Chinese Medicine world. This gives me experience in explaining acupuncture, which is generally delivered in a language of metaphor that defies easy translation into Western terms, to people who have no previous experience with it. It also gives me good insight into how acupuncture fits into the context of all the other types of healthcare a patient may be receiving. This allows my patients and I to have an informed discussion about what to expect from acupuncture, covering what acupuncture can and cannot provide in comparison with other forms of medicine and self-care.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
My favorite part of my job is watching people become more self-sufficient and confident in their wellbeing and recovery. I love talking with people after their first, second, or third acupuncture session when they describe the changes they noticed after their last treatment, even if they struggle to articulate what exactly those changes were. It’s not a report of improvement that I expect or look forward to, but the awareness, hope, and empowerment that arise when people notice a change in how they feel. It’s an old joke that good healthcare providers tend to put themselves out of business, but I appreciate the sentiment behind it. I genuinely enjoy the moment when a patient feels empowered to set their own schedule for follow up, confident they’ll know when their body tells them they need to return

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
The biggest misconception I hear is that acupuncture needles are magic—that the needles do the work that makes a person feel better. The needles are tools that allow the body to unstick and refocus its energy in more productive ways. The needles are tools that help unlock unrealized healing potential within the body. The needles facilitate the body’s innate ability to heal. I agree with my patients when they say that acupuncture feels like magic, because sometimes I feel that way too after my own acupuncture sessions. But I take care to explain that despite that feeling we can get from the needles, the magic of good health and healing isn’t in the needle itself. Rather, it’s in the body, mind, and spirit. The needles are efficient tools to access our own healing potential and allow the body to do what it is designed to do—sustain life and wellbeing.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
Maintaining a work-recreation balance keeps me happy and healthy. My work is balanced between seeing patients, the majority of what I do time-wise, and teaching addictions and disorders classes as adjunct faculty for Bastyr University’s Health Psychology Department. Doing one keeps me energized to do the other. I love providing care for individuals in my office, and also having the opportunity to work in the classroom training the next generation of healthcare providers. Outside of work, my lifestyle sustains me: eating in a way that nourishes me, exercising, sleeping, giving myself downtime from screens and social media, and being with my friends and family. I also use acupuncture and Western medicine to maintain my health. My hobbies include reading and participating in general fiction and science fiction book clubs, knitting, and playing harp in a Seattle-based ceilidh band, Seirm.

In what kind of setting do you deliver acupuncture care?
I work in a clinic that caters to women’s health, though I see both men and women in my practice. I also see children and adolescents over the age of eight. The types of conditions I see most often are musculoskeletal pain, allergies (digestive and environmental), headaches, mental health issues, women’s health concerns, including infertility, and cravings for psychoactive drugs and compulsive behaviors. In addition to being a licensed acupuncturist, I am also a naturopathic physician. I frequently see patients for both naturopathic and acupuncture care, but do so in separate appointments. An acupuncture appointment usually lasts 30-45 minutes and can be scheduled back-to-back with a naturopathic medicine appointment if desired. I am credentialed with and accept most private insurance plans, and offer a time-of-service cash discount to patients who do not have insurance or do not receive acupuncture benefits from their insurance plan.

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
I saw how effective acupuncture and herbal medicine were while working in wellness centers through college. Many people who came through the doors had tried everything Western medicine had to offer but were still in pain or having uncomfortable side effects from medication. Acupuncture and herbs were able to help such a wide variety of issues naturally and had lasting effects. I wanted to be able to offer people the same kind of relief I saw during that time.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
I have the privilege of working at a busy community clinic and was able to administer 2,000 treatments in my first year there. Because of the varied nature of the symptoms of each patient and the amazing team of acupuncturists at the clinic, I have gained priceless experience and treatment tools for even the very hard cases. Working as a teaching assistant at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine has kept me close to the academic side of Chinese medicine, helping me to continually develop a deeper understanding for the medicine.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
Seeing patients’ responses to the treatment. First timers are usually surprised by how painless the needles are, how long they slept for during treatment, and how relaxed they feel after.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
That practitioners insist on patients following strict lifestyle changes or only using one modality to heal. I like to tell patients to do what works! Everyone is different and is at various stages of the healing process. Acupuncture is assisting the body’s own incredible ability to heal itself and is a great adjunctive treatment. You don’t have to stop or start doing anything other than coming in for your appointment. The healthy changes usually start to happen on their own as patients become more in tune with their bodies.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
Finding fun ways to exercise! Practicing yoga, eating whole foods, and getting lots of relaxation.

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
I was watching a show on public television that featured the initial interview between an acupuncturist and a new patient. The acupuncturist was asking the patient questions that my regular doctor never asked me, such as, “Do you like your job?” “How do you handle/relieve stress?” “How many times a day do you have a bowel movement?” It struck me that these are the things that really matter, and the proverbial lightbulb went on over my head. I had to become an acupuncturist.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
My practice blends acupuncture with tui na, cupping, far-infrared heat, essential oils, clearing breaths and a take-home sheet of health promotion strategies. The health promotion strategies are customized for each person, but they will frequently focus on tips for better digestion. I practice Western herbal medicine, and I use pulse testing to determine the appropriate herbs. I also utilize professional-grade supplements by Standard Process to enhance the effects of the acupuncture and herbs.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
It never ceases to amaze me how powerful this medicine is. I often see a person at their very worst on their first visit only to see a sparkle in their eye and a smile on their lips when they return for follow-up treatment. Total job satisfaction.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
It seems that childhood visits to the doctor to get shots cast a dim view of needles in most people’s minds. However, I feel that acupuncture needles are very powerful communication tools that the body gladly accepts in its quest for healing. Often times people who are the most nervous during their first visit will practically throw themselves onto the treatment table at their follow-up visit because they enjoyed the needles so much.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I take the same recommendations that I give to my patients to stay healthy: regular acupuncture appointments, eating well, fresh air and exercise, a good night’s sleep, a connection with nature and plenty of hugs. Oh, and job satisfaction.

Styles: Japanese acupuncture (Kiiko Matsumoto)

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
I never went to the doctor growing up. I learned from an early age that with excellent health, we can thrive. I have devoted my life to helping people achieve a life with less pain, stress, or illness and to teaching them a lifestyle of balance. When I discovered acupuncture in college, it felt like instant magnetism. I was drawn to its unique and deep healing abilities.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
Instant and lasting results. Trained in Kiiko Matsumoto’s style of acupuncture, I utilize a feedback system of diagnosis that ensures that I precisely pinpoint the root cause of your discomfort, and that you leave my office feeling dramatically better. I consider myself a health detective—unraveling the story of who you are, offering you physical relief, and providing you tools for transforming how you feel in your life. You provide me your health map, and, like a pilot, I locate the precise coordinates to unlocking your physical and emotional recovery.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
Interacting with my patients and watching miracles happen. People change right in front of my eyes. As they continue their treatments, I watch them feel happier and live healthier. A woman recently came into my office for back pain. She had been in a car accident and after going to her chiropractor for a month he suggested she try acupuncture to help alleviate her pain. Her body movements, personality, and physical findings showed me issues that existed before the accident, and together with her words, I was able to quickly locate her personal prescription for healing. She is now pain free and back to her everyday life. Miracles like this are the fuel that keeps me excited about this medicine.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
1) Acupuncture doesn’t work. 2) Acupuncture uses big needles and hurts. Acupuncture has been around for 5,000 years. It is a highly regarded medical practice that has been referred to by Western medical doctors, chiropractors, psychologists, and other healthcare professionals for over 30 years in America. Many newcomers walk into my office thinking that the size of an acupuncture needle is the same as that of a hypodermic needle, which is the needle used for vaccinations. Acupuncture needles are hair-thin and often cannot be felt when inserted. A fun fact: It takes 15 acupuncture needles to fit in the hole of a hypodermic needle.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
Being an athlete, yogini, and swimmer, I have always been very involved with my physical and nutritional health. I exercise daily for at least an hour, I eat well, I work hard, I make sure to spend time with my friends and family, and I try to receive bodywork once a week. I am energized by my life’s work. It is such a privilege and joy to practice acupuncture every day. I truly feel blessed to have such wonderful patients who fill my day with connection, laughter, and discoveries. Thank you!

Fast facts
Practice type: Private

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
My background includes studies in psychology, Shiatsu, and Reiki, but with acupuncture I felt an immediate connection and I realized, from day one, that this would become my path as a healing artist. I found a medical method that was concrete, precise and full of insights into human complexity, and at the same time, an art that is ever-evolving and relevant to modern life’s challenges.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
My treatment is a lively, dynamic interaction, where patients are encouraged to actively participate in the process of changes in holding patterns. I combine Japanese acupuncture with trigger-point release and I specialize in unthreading the progression between chronic stress, chronic pain and chronic fatigue. I see one patient at a time, my treatments are 75-90 minutes long, and I use a lot of humor and good music (no new-age music in my practice—please, it gives me heartburn).

What do you enjoy most about your work?
1. I help people. Acupuncture is like restoring factory settings and sometimes I can see what patients looked like when they were born. The weight of the years is being pulled away. This is an amazing moment to witness. 2. When asked, “How far in do the needles go?” I say, “Do you mean in inches or in time?” 3. I see a happy crowd.

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
1. Qi is not energy. It is action-potential. I do not deal with some mystical form of energy healing. I deal with activating connective tissue, fascia, to send messages to the brain, thus eliciting hormonal, bio-chemical and bio-electrical changes in the body. 2. Acupuncture can create strong physical and emotional sensations. When releasing trigger points in muscles, patients will feel strong movements and some soreness. This is a very powerful and liberating feeling, as they realize that I am not causing them pain as much as I am touching their pain.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I pay great attention to what I eat and how I eat it. My wife and I are nutrition enthusiasts and we inquire a lot about it. I exercise regularly. I use stress-reduction and focusing techniques. I believe that the point of rest is the axis upon which the world revolves. I choose to be optimistic.

Why did you become an acupuncturist?
I felt acupuncture’s effectiveness when I first had it in 1978! Long story. Though I am from Minneapolis, I was living in San Francisco and had a specific health concern at the time. I am honored to say that I received acupuncture from Naboru Muramoto, a Japanese practitioner and the author of Healing Ourselves. I had great success with those treatments and that was the beginning of my interest in acupuncture. I later moved to Chicago to study at the Midwest College of Oriental Medicine and graduated in January 1988.

What distinguishes you from other acupuncturists?
After 23 years of private acupuncture practice (I also provided acupuncture to county addictions programs), I connected with the community acupuncture movement and opened Abundant-Chi Community Acupuncture in December 2010. This distinguishes me as a provider of NADA (the ear acupuncture protocol of the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association), with experience in providing both private and community acupuncture services. I’ve done it all! Seriously, I treat all sorts of conditions.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love introducing patients to Chinese medicine and acupuncture. It really is a new way of looking at our wellness. It is so much about self-care and self-awareness. Call me to find out more!

What is the biggest misconception you hear about acupuncture?
After 25 years of providing acupuncture treatment, I still think the biggest misconception is that acupuncture is painful. Ha! Almost everyone falls asleep! Our center is quiet and relaxing.

How do you stay healthy in your own life?
I practice mindfulness meditation and Tai Chi. I am actually a cancer survivor and use Chinese medicine practices and concepts in my day-to-day life. Herbs, foods, self-care, acupressure and movement are all components of Traditional Chinese Medicine for maintaining balance and wellbeing.
